My DD brought her little dog with them for Christmas. She was in the back yard and found a skunk and attacked it just as I opened the door to get her in. She got it good and the wind blew it indoors as she ran in right under our bed.Then she ran in and jumped right in the middle of a bed with one of my treasured quilts my DM made for me many years ago. We have used everything we can think of to get the smell out of the carpet under the bed and the quilt. The quilt as been washed and washed and aired but I can still smell it when it is close to my face. Has anyone ever had this problem and if so please tell me how you solved the problem. I sure thank you for any help.

The best thing I have found for skunk smell is tomato juice. When my dogs get into a skunk I take them directly to the bath & bathe them several times with tomato juice. Rub it in really good & them shampoo them with a combination of the juice & soap. I've never had it on a quilt but I'm assuming you could wash it (or let it soak in tomato juice) several times. At times I've not had the juice so used tomato sauce, or ketsup....anything with tomatoes. Good luck!

check more on quilt before using tomato juice on it. more should pop in to help soon. I myself am not sure.

I believe you can get shampoos for pets themselves at a pet store. They may have something for carpets.

Tomato acid does work, but may leave a permanent red stain...

OK, my dog got both of use sprayed. Please note dog in question is a small 15bl pug.
She was washed with tomato sauce 16oz and then rewashed in top shampoo to remove the pink out of her fur.
Me, all clothing off and in to the washing machine with 8oz tomato sauce including my shoes. The clothing was reran with clothing soap. Feet washed in tomato sauce and rewashed then dried. All clothing is fine and in use. I was wearing a white top and black pants, top is still white.
She was not allowed to run around the house before cleaned.
The side of the house was sprayed off every other day with water for three months and the smell is now gone.

I used dawn on the dog-would probably work on the quilt, too.Original blue Dawn. Maybe a soak/rinse in Odo-Ban?

I know tomato juice works on dogs. Quilt I would not know what to use.

Hot vinegar helps neutralize the odour too. There are dog shampoos that neutralize odours too. You could try washing the quilt with washing soda or baking soda. Both should help and not hurt the quilt. But it may be a case of hanging the quilt outside on a sunny ice cold day.
