My neighbor brought 3 of these things over. He doesn't know what they are either. Someone gave one to him last year, he tasted it and then threw the seeds out the back door. This year he had a vine with about 40-50 of these things on it.

The skin is smooth and bright yellow. It does have some streaks vertically though. They smell like canteloupe. It doesn't have the texture of a canteloupe though. He said they taste sweet, but not really good (which would lead you to ask why he would share them with me...right??) He said the inside looked like a canteloupe though with the seeds.

Anybody know what in the heck it is?

No clue, but will hazard a wild guess - is it some kind of squash.

Is it a strange version of a kumquat?

ETS: Maybe not...they look like oranges inside and you say it looks like a cantaloupe.

I think it may be a gourd also...which would explain why it didn't taste too good. I've thrown gourds from my fall decoration out into the compost pile, and then the seeds germinated when I put them on the garden the next spring and I had some volunteer vines.
