I saw this article today “10 Ways to Avoid Contractor Scams” for people that need to have work done on their homes after Irene.

When we had Hurricanes Francis & Jean the scammers came out of the woodwork. So many families and individuals in our area were taken for thousands and thousands of dollars. This article gives tips on how to protect yourself when needing work done on your home.

Note: Make sure any contractors you are interviewing to do repairs on your home are licensed and insured in your city. Check the dates on both to make sure they are current.

I am sorry to have to say it but I sure hope there is a special place in hell for anybody that woud take advantage of anybody hurt by such a terrible event as a hurricane or earthquake.

My heart goes out to those who have been hurt and those good people that will be helping them.

I agree with you Doris, especially those who take advantage of the elderly people who seem to be more trusting. crafty_linda_b

I remember... blue tarps covering many, many rooftops while the roofing "contractors" ran off with the "down payments"... of course, before the roofs were fixed. BUYER BEWARE! Use someone reputable who has been in business in your area for a while... even though it may be a bit more costly, at least you will get the repairs completed for your money.

It might be worthwhile to join Angies List when looking for contractors.

Me too, those blue tarps were everywhere! It was so sad. I think people were walking around in shock at first. Some people were living in feema trailers in their driveways because their homes were filled with mold and unsafe to live in.

I am very grateful to those who came from other states to lend a helping hand in the hot humid weather and away from their families. They worked hard and long hours to help get us on our feet again.
