Betty I am so sorry! I am often at home alone (my DH helps to coach our grandson's basketball and baseball teams). Things are so different now. I was sharing your story with my husband and he said in the future NEVER go to the door to answer. Ask who is is standing back (with your gun) if you know no one is expected. Don't give directions---they can just drive to a gas station and ask. Do your dogs make a lot of noise? We have a little 8 lb. poodle who sounds like a 200 lb Great Dane! He is our little alert! I try very hard to be careful---we have an alarm system; security doors and bars on the back of our house; a security pole that I can put under the door handle in my bedroom; AND a gun I am not afraid to use. It is a shame you have to be so paranoid, but given the fact that now people aren't afraid to break into a house with occupants, I think a little paranoid behavior is justified. Now my kids when they are coming to visit and know I am alone, always call first and tell me they are in the driveway! Please be careful and take care!!

I'm so sorry that this happen to you, but know a days you have to be careful. You don't know what some people will do. Keep your gun with you and hopefully you don't have this happen again. Be safe

Betty, I just read you post and I hope you were able to get some sleep last night. Those are scarey moments when people ring the bell at night and the way those people were acting you were right in handling it the way you did. Sounds like they up to no good and sounds like you kept you wits about you. I hope you called the police back and had them do a check on the area around your house. What a scarey night for you.

I don't think I would tell anyone about the gun either. It may give some people incentive to get into the house to get access to the gun/guns. One thing I was told years ago, if your going to contemplate using a gun for self protection make sure you are ready to use it against another person, because if they get it away from you they will surely use it against you. I hope for me if I ever face that, my natural instinct for self preservation will kick in.

We had a guy ring the bell at 3am just a couple nights ago, drunk as a skunk my husband said. He was looking for the neighbor. By time my husband got to the door he was out on the sidewalk because he heard our dogs going off. We have a aussie/husky mix and a full blood aussie. The aussie mix has a really ferocious bark and then throw in the other dog and they get loud.
Like you I never answer the door to strangers, even in the day and even to people who look totally harmless. I keep my door locked when home to, my kids give me a hard time about that but I figure better safe than sorry. There are just to many weirdo's out there bent on doing harm.

I'm so sorry this has happened to you.I hope that you got the call and they found out who these people where.But one thing is never tell and one about your little buddy.I have one myself and my little buddy is where i can get to him if need be.People are desperate these days and it's going to get worse before it will get better.
God is with you and he will see through this ordeal.

I was early one evening, I had been outside putting trash in my can. As I headed back to the porch a van was going slowly down the road. We live in a rural area. They stopped and called me over. I wouldn't. So they asked for directions, I gave as good as I could, . They were driving around and around our area. I could not understand why they did not take my directions. I called the police and reported them. Come to find out, they were robbing homes in the area. I was able to give a good description of the vehicle and part of the license plate. I don't know if they caught them, but, I too have my gun nearby.
Glad that you are safe! Seems more and more people look to rob homes in rural areas

So sorry to hear this; my hubs is away often and I worry like crazy about this- the house is in a neighborhood w/ people all around, but it has lots of big windows and a set of french doors - our bedrm is first floor front, so you could walk in right thru a window!
If this happens again, say thru the door - "wait right there, my husband is the chief of police, let me call him and get some help for you!" If he hightails out of there you KNOW hes a bad apple! Also, at night have your gun by the door, and also a cell phone and as soon as anyone does that I need help thing, immediately call 911- while theyre on the porch, dont let them know, cus if they hang around the car a few min it gives the cops time to get there.
Maybe you could get cameras on your front gate (sort of hidden) set up to take pictures in both directions - you need a copy of the plate on the car for the cops to catch these creeps.
right after my first husband died, about a month - 2 guys were pounding on my door in the middle of the nite looking for a girl they talked to in a bar! I chased them away, and they went next door (also on my property, a little house - no one lived there - yards right next door!) and pounded there! I went out and tried to run them off again, but 1 was so drunk he decided I was "hiding" who they were looking for - by the time he got back on my porch I had my husbands rifle (didnt shoot, it had a warped barrel!) and met him at the door and told him, get off my porch or by God I'll blow you off my porch!, and I'm calling the cops! and he ran to the car and dove in the window and they peeled out!

I would have been scared to death!!!!! I would never open my door to anyone I didn't know for sure! and for double sure at night.
