We are directly on the north shore of Long Island - 70 miles from NYC. Thank God we had all the trees around the house that didn't come down with Irene removed! We are 35 feet up from the harbor, so no worry about flooding, but the winds could bring some trees down from the woods near the house. And of course we will probably loose power.
Be prepared is all I can say!
Everyone stay safe!

I live in Massachusetts and they tell us that we are not in the direct path but we will have damaging winds and lots of rain because of the size of this storm. Power outages are also expected. I hope everyone in the path of this storm stays safe.

Hi nygal, yes I am also on the east coast, live in south eastern Pa, but only 25 miles from the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. It is very scary and we have a lot of big old trees on our property. About 10 years ago during hurricane Floyd one of those trees landed on our house, took out the master bedroom and bath. Husband and I had just gotten out of the bed when a huge tree fell and came through the roof and landed on the bed. Every time the wind blows now I am terrified. We have been advised to expect heavy flooding from 8-10 inches of rain and constant winds of 40 mph with gusts of 65 mph. I have been a nervous wreck all day and probably will be until this is over. We have prepared as much as we can and are as ready as we can be. Wishing everyone in the east good luck and keeping all in our prayers.

All great suggestions...when in doubt, get out! Katrina got us and we are way inland.

ALSO, REMEMBER MEDICATIONS...get your refills!

The last thing Vermont expects to have is a hurricane. Winter snow, yes, hurricane, no, but hurricane Irene taught us last year to be prepared for the unexpected. Now the evening news points out that Sandy is taking the same path that Irene did, so it's time to hunker down. At least we won't have to shovel snow! Sure wish I had accepted my grandmother's treadle when it was being given away!

I live in Fl. now but am from RI so I know what to expect. If you are on an island don't take a chance and stay there the tides are already higher than usual and there will be two of them before the storm is out of the area.'When I lived in RI we had 52" of snow one storm and the state was crippled for a wk or more so try to get some food that doesn't have to be refridgerated. We had gas heat so we could cook and had heat but if the power is off get some afghans or blankets handy and something to keep busy with to pass the time until it's time to shovel.
We were here for Hurricane Charley Cat 4 but a smaller area storm but like a bomb wind wise. We was really lucky that there was not much to speak of storm surge but you really don't want to be on a barrier island they can't help you and with the tides high it's not a good idea. Remember the power goes off and your alone so take care don't take chances it's not worth it. Remember things can be replaced lives cannot.
I will pray for you all that things are not as bad as they say but they had warnings for Katrina and people didn't listen and I think we all heard what happened there. Flooding is worse than snow until it starts to melt. Just do what they tell you and you s/b safe. We listened one time and ran away for a hurricane which turned at the last min but how do you know what'll happen. Charley wasn't supposed to hit us until the last min it turned and we had two elderly aunts at our house it was supposed to be safer and then we had to run to a shelter in case one of them would have needed help. Prayers and hugs to all. Take care. Sue
