I hate Bats and Snakes, Bat in house goes out in a body bag, snakes in yard better out run the mower! If they get in the ditch or the farmers field they are safe unless they come back. Sorry just how I am.

Poor bats have gotten a (mostly) bad rap. They do not suck our blood, they eat insects like mosquitos. They fly around inside, because they are confused. We live in a really old house, and will usually get a bat in the house every so often. We have found that if we just stay quiet, the bat will land on the curtain, and then we can wrap it in a towel and take it outside again. My youngest granddaughter was terrified of the bat, until we explained that he was lost, and looking for a way out to go home again.

Why can't your DH call an exterminator in her town set up the appointment. He could tell her to act rationally or be considered not fit to live alone which leads to being put in a home. That will make her furious and but I bet she will think before she acts so stupid next time. Unless she does need to be in a home. LOL.

I used to work in a school for mentally ill children. One day we heard an awful screaming coming from one of the classrooms. We all ran there thought someone was being killed. All of the students had run from the classroom and the teacher was under her desk screaming hysterically. There was a bat in the room. ( it is a really old building, built in 1907) We put a sheet over her and got her out of the room. She was so hysterical we thought we were going to have to call an ambulance. It took almost an hour to calm her down. I went in and opened all the windows. I ended up catching it in a sheet. We all laughed about it for years.

a bat got in our house a while back and it was night so we cut off all the lights and just had an outside light on. we opened the door to stay open and it went right on out. it came from the attic down by the chimney i think. they had chewed through the wire on the ends where the louver type things were on the house and so we had to reinforce and put stronger wire there. it has to be done probably in the spring while they are gone or while most are gone. i have read that if they aren't gone, you would need to hang a sheet way done where they could get out but couldn't get back in and then reinforce the wire. i am glad we didn't have to do that.

Wow! I never have had to deal with a bat, but it is good to know that you can catch and release. If they were in my neighborhood I would probably treat them like the spiders. If you stay outside you can live.

Call in a professional, NOW, to deal with it, IF your husband agrees it'd be better to pay for it himself than have his mother suffer a stroke from the worry or from the heat/other dangers of trying to sleep in her car, etc., since you're too far away to perform the more humane catch & release of the bat.
Also, as someone mentioned, she wouldn't rest until she knew their future entry was blocked too.
Tell her it's an early whatever-occasion 'gift'.

I think perhaps you are the lucky one. Never underestimate the power of a concrete buffer. If she lived close to you I wager you would never have a moment's peace or any privacy. This offered from the one who "stole her favorite son". We lived 3 hours away and it was just right. Close enough to get there if we were really needed but far enough away so that one had to think about it before deciding to go.
