The second to last fledgling has flown from the nest. Meaning? My son left for his last year of college this morning. He goes to school in Phoenix, only 120 miles away, and we will see him on Wednesday when we bring the bulk of his things up to him, but still. I'm a mix of emotions this morning - both happy and sad. This was likely his last summer home, because he hopes to get married shortly after graduation. I now only have one (out of 4, plus two step sons) left at home. She works and is in college full time herself, so it's not like I'll see much of her this fall, but she is still here :)

I'm certain there are others here who are going through this bittersweet time.

Yes, it's bitter-sweet! It will take awhile to get used to cooking for only two, more than likely light eaters, compared to your son. But, once you get used to the peace and quiet, you are going to LOVE being empty nesters!! CONGRATULATIONS!! You earned it.!

It is good that they are ABLE to leave home.

But there is still a bit of a pang when they actually do leave.

What Grama Lehr said - once you get used to it, you're going to love it. Our last one just graduated college and will most likely be leaving by the first of the year. Sad for us AND happy for her!

The grandson leaves on Thursday for his 1st year in college. We are not taking him, but are following him. My sister works at the university, so we are going to go visit her, and be there if he needs anything. That means when we return home on Friday, my husband and I will finally be retired and empty-nesters! We have looked forward to this day for a long time. I even bought a new car 2 weeks ago today, to have for traveling!!! It will be great. It is bittersweet, but raising grandchildren is such a mixed thing, good for the grandchild, but hard on the old grandparents.

Remember the two greatest gifts you can give your children are.

WINGS TO FLY AND A NEST TO COME HOME TO.
