A couple of weeks ago I adopted a dog from the human society. Since I got him home he is constantly itching.
I've taken him to the vet and its not fleas or mites. Changed his diet to a lamb/rice but the itching continues.
Tried oatmeal bath - no improvement. Has anyone had to deal with this and how did you solve the problem.
this must be driving the poor guy crazy.

Sounds like allergies...call your vet and ask if you can give him benedryl. Helped mine Poor little boogie.

He could be nervous, being adopted. He is in a new place and doesn't know what is going to happen next. Hasn't known for sometime, probably.

This past yr my dog all of a sudden started doing the same thing. My daughter is a groomer and said she had a yeast infection; down below and in her ears. I took her to the vet and at first he didn't think that's what she had but, yes it was. Plus all of a sudden she's sensitive to the fleas to the point that her skin turns red; like inflammed. She's always been on flea prevention but with some dogs it only takes on flea to cause this. I changed flea meds to internal once a month and she took some antibiotics. She's alot better and her fur has mostly grown back. My large dog we give vitamins too and they help his skin along with his joints. Plus when his skin is really dry we put Skin So Soft on it and that helps him.

I vote for the benedryl and skin so soft. Skin so soft will help keep the fleas away. When we lived in Florida, we would soak my dog in a tub of warm water and skin so soft. We would just sit with him and keep swishing the water over him.

We had another dog later on that was allergic to everything green and growing. But she had to be an outside dog since she could not control her bladder. The Vet advised the lowest dosage available in over the counter benedryl.

My dog has multiple food allergies-after many years of trial and error we've settled on Iams Sensitive Oceanfish, Barley and Rice. She seemed to be allergic to chicken and that is in almost everything! When we were trying different foods the vet said it takes awhile to get the old food out of the system-like twelve weeks or so. Bailey is also on Benedryl when she just can't stop itching. Good luck.

Our dog is allergic to fleas. He has to get a steroid shot once a year , Plus he takes flea meds every month. Benadryl is not enough.

We had a little dog we adopted and before long he also started itching. His hair was oily, skin flakey with pimple like sores. He would scratch so much that he would bleed. We had to wash him in Dawn, then let him sit in an oatmeal bath. He probably got a bath two or three times a week. Did I tell you that he smelled sooooo bad. We loved that little guy. We had him tested for his allergies and he was allergic to almost everything. He should have been adoped by someone in NYC where he could never walk on grass. Anyway, we had to give him steroids every day to keep him in check. He certainly was high maintainence but probably the nicest dog we ever had.
