Kolona Iowa
Thinking of an overnite road trip there....anyone been there? I looked to book the local motel, but no res available...on a tues/wed...seems odd...will have to call and find out why. Since I'm not familiar with the area, don't know what town/city is close by for alternative reservation......anyone here know? TIA....

Looks like an interesting place to visit with a couple of quilt stores along with antiques and a Textile Museum.

Iowa City is not very far away from Kalona. You can find hotels there. Kalona is a small Menenite community. They has lots of quilt shops there....most of the store in town have a fabric corner. The Stitch and Sew is a really nice shop. It is next door to the textile museum. There is a annual quilt show in Kalona in April. It features lots of quilts done by local people and are mostly hand quilted.

On the sidewalk are painted quilt blocks, 42 in all I think. There are also barn quilt trails but they require quite a distance in driving and some barns are not close to the road so they are harder to see. All the other things listed by others are also well worth the trip. Hope you have more than one day to look around.

I went last year. The whole town is behind the quilt theme so its really neat to stroll around. The quilts are displayed Very close together at the show, like 18 inch aisles. The quilts are amazing. The quilt museum is good. The docent we had was one of the original starters of the annual show as I remember. We stayed out of town but it wasn't too far. There are lots of quilt stores in town. The shops in town are nice and there's lots of eating places too. It's a good experience. Have fun. You will be in good company.
