I would like to make a large floor pillow for a child, maybe 36" square and around 8" thick. I am wondering what to use for stuffing. It will take a lot of whatever I use and I don't really want this to cost a fortune. I also think I would like it to be washable so I'll have to make a pillow form myself for the inside. I am assuming they don't make them this big! Does anyone have any experience with something like this? TIA< Laura

How about a large piece of foam. You can always put batting or stuffing over it to make it more comfy.

I made one with those packing pellets that were used in bean bag chairs. The little girl just loved it.

Expanding on this, I believe it was at a craft that I heard am employee tell someone it would actually be cheaper to get a couple of body pillows from Walmart and use the stuffing from those rather than buying the packaged stuff. Just might be something to look into.

They do make 36" pillow inserts if that's what you want, but I'd make my own in order to have it thinner and less rigid than the standard form. I used to make tons of them when I was more into home dec than quilting. Make the form out of muslin, stuff it with polyester fiber from any craft store, and stitch it closed. Remenber to stuff it fuller than you think necessary since it will be used for sitting on the floor and will 'squish' a lot. Stuffing with bean bag pellets would work, too.

I'd definitely make the covering removable so it can be washed separately. Washing pillow forms is tricky at best and a poly filled muslin one would be quick and cheap to replace if needed, much cheaper and quicker than a quilted covering would be.

Just a tip: Curve the corners of both the form and the cover to avoid dog ears on the pillow. Also make the form slightly larger than the covering for a 'fuller' fit.

They were relatively inexpensive and they are holding up very well.
