Default "Lockup" Quilts

Not sure if anyone ever watches Lockup on Saturday nights on msnbc, but found it as I was going through the channels. I stopped to watch it because it was a maximum security prison, in Indiana, where some of the inmates were making quilts. These were inmates with life sentences, murderers, 100 year sentences, etc......... bad guys. They had a room with some sewing machines (and children's scissors, that they have to check-out). They made about 1000 last year and 900 the year before. Some were really....really nice. They donate them to good causes and to military families. They display them in their "sewing room" until they are donated.

I found it to be very interesting and nice to know that they are doing something creative to help others, while they are serving time.

I have seen the show a few times but not that one, I wish I had, sounds like a good idea, could be a win win situation.

One of our QB members works with that program and has shared some of her experience here with us in the past.

Perhaps she will notice your thread, and tell us more?

I wish I had seen it. When the thread was on here about this kind of program out west, I wondered if anyone was doing it in Indiana. I had seen some quilts at the Kentucky State Fair that had been done by some female inmates. Quilting is for everyone and obviously is good therapy for all of us.

The Women's Prison in Vandalia, Mo. has a group that makes quilts, afghans and many other items. The items are then donated to various charities. The women are so proud of their work as they should be. They accept donations of fabric and yarn etc. This gives these women skills they never learned and a purpose in life.
