Tonight our news station had this feature on Bullet-proof backpack inserts....great concept. Maybe this could help save our kids till we get this school shooting issue figured out forever. There is something very wrong with our society when we have to think of bulletproof backpacks inserts for our kids, although, if I had kids in school, I would buy them in a heartbeat and then instruct them how to hold the backpack to prevent bullets reaching them.

I can't believe we're discussing something so insane. I never thought about homeschooling as an option for my kids but if they were little now I would probably be considering it.

At $120 each, someone's going to be making big money out of those inserts. Ironic how difficult it would be to get a funding increase of $120 per student for our local schools through taxation.

Are school children even allowed to have backpacks at their desks? Seems to me they would be in the way in case of a fire, when everyone needs to get out of the classrooms quickly.

Edit: I just noticed that these inserts stop bullets from handguns (small bore cartridges). They wouldn't stop the large bore cartridges used in the Florida shooting. I think most, if not all of the shootings with the worst casualties involved use of a semi-automatic large-bore rifle.

retired as an educator 3.5 yrs ago--no kids are not allowed to have backpacks at desks as it becomes an issue in movement--you are right about the fire hazard--or an active shooter situation (or drills, which most schools have done for years--one of a series of "codes"--fire, tornado, active shooter, chemical spill--boy, the good old nuclear bomb drills of my school days sure seems simple now).
And you are right Prism about not stopping semi-automatic weapons. I read (almost wish I hadn't) an essay written by on of the ER docs in Parkland FL who described the difference between gun wounds from handguns and those from AR-15, etc--said that basically the AR-15 pulverizes the tissues so not a "wound" per se, but just turning the area "hit" into mush and that surviving that kind of wound is a no-go--just made me sick to even think about.

I had heard, before all this, that "kevlar" won't stop a bullet from an AK-47 or any other assault rifle.

Now they want to arm the teachers. That's insanity. First, unless they have military or law enforcement background they aren't going to have the skills needed. Even with training you have to be aware of what's around you. Sometimes it's not safe to shoot due to the surrounding area (people mainly). What will happen if an armed teacher accidentally shoots a student? They need to put trained armed security at the schools not teachers. One of the schools here installed locks on the doors of each classroom that anyone could use to lock the door in an emergency situation. It was simple and effective. I think locking the exterior doors to schools would be a common sense solution too. It wouldn't prevent a problem but it would reduce the chances. Unfortunately, no matter what is done, sometimes you can't prevent something bad happening. JMHO

There was a story just the other day on tv that said those backpacks will not stop bullets from the automatic weapons being used. Use your money to fight for gun control. Use your vote to vote out legislators who will not fight for gun control.

I'm for "trained" teachers, and having it mandated that they go at least
once a year, to a class to keep them up to date.
I'm even more for the security guards, and locked doors!!! Yes! to that idea,
big time.
It's like schools are the prisons, and all the crazies are on the outside, trying
to get in.
It's time for this whole country to back the parents and the kids, and demand
these changes.
How are we to tell our kids and grandkids, the government says they have to
go to school, and they know what's going on.
Bullies in schools, and ppl trying to get in with guns?

Just a few of my ideas---1) Bullet proof doors with bullet proof glass, Isn't the official Presidential vehicle protected with such?
2) Trained, armed security- retired Vets. 3) Teachers have too much responsibility as is, let the teachers teach! 4) Metal detectors at exit/entrance exterior doors. 5) Buzzer system at the entrance/exit exterior doors(my moms nursing home had this) doors are in lock down--No free access.
