Does will place their fawns in a safe (to them) place and leave them while they forage for food. If anyone finds a fawn alone, it is usually best to take a "watch and see" approach before disturbing or "rescuing" the baby. The majority of the time the mother will return for her baby. If in doubt, you can always call a wildlife rescue/rehab facility for advice (many hotline numbers can be found online). Obviously, if the fawn is in danger from traffic, dogs or other hazards, you would want to keep it safe. Sadly, many fawns become orphaned unnecessarily each spring because well meaning people think they are abandoned
    and "rescue" them.
    good advice
    darling picture!!!!

How cool, they are cute! We had a friend that raised one followed them all over and one day he saw his reflection in a window and jumped through the window and was cut up so bad that he didnt live! But they sure enjoyed him while they had him! was a good watch deer! as he would great visitors when they drove up!!

We, too, are fortunate enough to live in the country and the deer trot through everybody's yards like kids - it is so neat so see them bringing a little newborn almost like they want you to meet them. :-)

My sentiments exactly when I read this!!! I love Audrey :)

Do be careful! If you ever hear Mom make a blowing, whistling noise know to back away fast. Our deer in the country aren't that used to people, and are very protective of their young. We wouldn't dare go too close.

mamma deer puts the baby in a special spot for safe keeping until she returns, best to leave the baby alone, mamma will be back at the end of the day. Have seem this happen a number of times where I worked.

It is interesting that there has been an enormous increase in the numbers of wild deer all over eastern mid america.
When I was a kid, we never saw a deer, now there are thousands!
...and they love your gardens too!

We learned last year that sometimes a mother deer will drop off her young in a safe place to rest during the day, she will move on, but return for it. Animal control said not to worry about the fawn, just let it be.

    Precious picture.
My guess is that Mama left baby safely hidden under the table while out eating, knew exactly where the baby was & had plans to return. It is usually best not to handle the fawn, as some does will not take them back after fawns have been handled & covered with human scent. I'm glad you got the picture, but I'm especially happy for the fawn that Mama was bold enough to retrieve her baby. Happy day for all.

What a great picture, I'm surprised the baby would let you hold it. They are so cute - like Bambi.
