If u r going to Tennessee u need to go to Chattanooga to see the Rock Garden it is amazing! Also there is Ruby Fall which is in a cave. My DH and I did the auto tour through the Smokey Mountain. It was great we really like looking at how the spring houses were make... A spring house was their fridge in the early days. Some were over a real spring or some had hallowed trees that brought the water in to keep their butter and other stuff cold.
You should take a trip to Canada. We have tons of stuff to see. the East coast has the old history and the west coast has the Rocky Mountains. I live in Southern Saskatchewan where it is very flat but only about half of our province is populated. The north part is tree and lakes for great fishing.

Ranchwifetold you about places to go along the coast of California and she isright on! But there are also awsome National Parks, likeSequoia, Redwoods, Death Valley (NOT in summer unless you plan todrive through in your air conditioned car (it was over 100 degrees at10:00 last time we went through in the summer), Yosemite (and nearbyHetch Hetchy... the "other" part of Yosemite).
Also,Utah is filled with incredible canyons and it is usually comfortableenough in the summer (look up Utah Parks on the internet) and nearbyArizona has wonderful sights, including Grand Canyon, old towns thatnever died, painted desert, ancient Indian places (avoid Phoenix, unless you are golf fanatics or like to bicyle (they have great pavedtrails), Tombstone, and the chance to dip into Mexico for shopping(great place to get small unique presents for Christmas). Next doorto the east is New Mexico which has wonderful towns (Albuquerkee(spell!), Santa Fe, artsy towns, fun places to explore, wonderfulmuseums).
Thereis also the area just below South Dakota in the NE Wyoming area wherethere is Devil's tower, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments (thewhole area caters to travelers with cowboy stuff, including horsebackriding, wild animal zoo you can drive through, (pens with baby bearsbeing given a chance to grow up), campgrounds with swimming, etc.).
Yellowstoneis just west and is worth several days.
Alaskais incredible, beautiful and interesting at several levels. You haveto make reservations to stay at the train motel or a hostel, or stayin your rig if you rent one.
DHand I go on Roads Scholar programs (NOT Rhoads! but the formerElderhostel group) and they take care of everything for you. Thepeople that go on these trips tend to be really people with a widevariety of experiences. Even their sea voyages are great. They arenot a bar group (which we have been told are really fun on cruiseships, which is one reason we haven't gone on one) but people who areinterested in other cultures and seeing new areas more thanpurchasing things (but still a wonderful way to pick up the necessarypresents for holidays).]
Hopesome of this helps! Have fun!

Gosh, there's so much to see in this country that it's hard to choose. If you opt for California, San Francisco is one of those places that I would go back to in a heartbeat, if only for the food! Great shopping, and the wine country is so beautiful. A couple of years ago, we visited Portland, and a few years before that Seattle. Both are interesting with lots to do and see, particularly if you like the outdoors.

If you're doing Tennessee and like music, there's a lot of things to do in Nashville. And DH and I had a very interesting visit to the Hermitage, Pres. Andrew Johnson's homestead, there as well.
A trip on our bucket list is to do New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine and then go on up to New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. We hope to do this in the next few years. We did spend 2 days on the Maine coast a number of years ago and have wanted to go back ever since.

I was going to say OR coast, but I like ranchwife's idea of driving up 101 thru the Redwoods and along the OR coast. It is so beautiful Or go through the redwoods and cut over to hwy 97 past Crater Lake and through central OR.
