I just have a plain phone...I never activated the texting or internet functions. I just have it for emergencies. It would drive me nuts to have it beeping and buzzing all the time with notifications for everything! People can't seem to sit down to a meal or walk down a grocery aisle anymore without a phone hooked to them!

I have a smart phone and just love it. The most valued feature for me is the google talk on it. All you do is speak what you are looking for in the town and state you want and it brings it up. Since I travel a great deal with hubby due to his job I am always in a new area and it have become a life saver for me. I just switched from @%$! to Verizon and I got the Droid3 by Motorola and so far I am LOVING IT. For me every time I go to get the I PHONE and talk with the sales person I find that the Droid is more what I need. Mine was the same cost as the I Phone and they have different Data plans and I think the cheapest is like $10.00 if you will not be using it alot.
You may think you would not use all those fancy things as I used to but believe me it does not take long to get very very used to it.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do....

I have a Droid phone and LOVE it - except for it's battery consumption. Oh well...

ATT here on a family plan. For us a NON smart phone has unlimited data plan for only $10 a month. 2G Smart phone is $25...when near wireless internet (home or out) the phone will use the wireless internet connection and not use up the phones data time. Never gone anywhere near the 2G. I don't live on my phone but it's really necessary when you're out and about traveling.

We re going thru the same thing here. We have a family plan with Verizon and have been with them for years. Here in Ohio I rarely find a dead zone, very few dropped call and have been very happy with the service. We are also finding very few phones that don't require a data plan on any service. I pay for internet at home , don't see why I need it on my phone. Our phone bill would be $300/ month with a data plan. It just isn't in the budget. In my opinion there aren't any decent phones without a data plan.

I am "old fashioned"...I don't care if my phone takes pictures (I carry my digital camera pretty much all the time), accesses the internet (I carry a laptop--for work, which can access wi-fi), I have a GPS unit in my car...and on-Star...I want my phone to have a dial tone when I need to make a call, and ring when someone calls me...I don't text....if you want to get information to me...either e-mail me or CALL me...

Basic phone, basic plan, a decent laptop, a comfy chair, my sewing machine, and a healthy stash....that's all I need to make me happy as a June bug in May! Basic and proud of it, LOL!:D

Mine's Verizon, both cell and internet connection-with-Mi-fi and the total is less than $70 a month.

I'm with you Jan! My phone went in the pool with me last weekend (don't ask!) and I have been all week looking at new phones and plans but still haven't made a decision. I don't need all the extras, but my kids text me a lot due to signal issues, and I would like that.

if I call a thing a "phone" thats all I use it for lol. its the cheapest price for me. I dont phone and drive, never text (its a PHONE!, why would I TYPE!?), never take pics (I have a great little camera in my purse). Why use apps on a screen just a bit bigger than postage stamps - K.I.S.S. applies for me.
If I were you, I'd dump the expense and just use a cell for emergencies on the road, and get an Ipad type tablet for all the other things. It just seems people cannot live w/o being connected by wifi to apps - all the time kids/people waste on angry birds etc could be used in doing something that actually moves them forward, or is helpful, or creative - heck, they could just take a nap and wake up smiling for a change. sharet

I feel like I can do everything from my PC, and I know I can get a phone for both of us from another company (don't know if allowed to mention here) with unlimited text and calling to each other -- it would be $30 a month.

Do many of you use the apps seen everywhere, or the "Smart Phone" for things you couldn't do elsewhere?

Is it worth it to pay for the phone services? I rarely get calls from anyone but my husband, and a few appointment verifications, etc.
We got 'smart phones' with all the fun stuff, web access, email, etc. I enjoyed it but due to a change in income we had to downgrade to 'dumb phones'. I've made the adjustment well & really don't miss the bells & whistles. Or the huge bill. Sometimes the hype of advertizing makes us think we just HAVE to have it (whatever IT is) or we'll 'miss out'. Only thing I'm missing out on is the huge expense. When our current contract is up in December we're going with an UNmentioned company for unlimited text, cheap calls, with no contract.

unlimited text and talk and he has his data too. were both happy that way. id probably throw an iphone out the window i have very little patience with stuff like that.

It was time for my 2 year upgrade so I got a smartphone at Verizon. The battery lasted 1/2 day if I made one short call on it and from getting up til bedtime if I didn't use it at all. Not worth it and I took it back and now using my old phone. The battery lasts about 5 days on average if I don't use it a lot.
