That's quite a sanitization of the acronym. Not sure my former Marine husband would recognize it.

Well, that's what my Encarta dictionary said - I sort of assumed that "fouled" might not have been the usually used word

:) :) :) :) :)

Hey amma I've got stacks of fabric galimaufreys! (or is it 'galimaufreies'?)

Here's a Northern English one -

'to fettle' a verb meaning to fiddle about with something in a constructive way in order to sort it out. To call someone a 'fettler' is a term of affection. For example, if the kettle is broken you could 'fettle the kettle'

Also used as an adjective in regular English 'to be in fine fettle' - to be in good form.

Also Northern 'mek a brew' - to make a cup of tea. Only in a pot with leaves NOT a bag in a cup! :-D

'lune' is French for 'moon'. :-D 'lunettes' in French means glasses or spectacles - probably for the same reason as the English 'half-moon' spectacles?

I LOVE this stuff! Keep 'em coming! :-D

It's from the French 'abattre' meaning to slaughter. :-D

Yes, thanks to the invasion of William the Conqueror in 1066! A lot of English words are derived from French or at least, the same Latin root. It helps enormously with my French - if I don't know a word, I try the English word in a French accent and 9 times out of 10, it works! :-D
