Default Pet Doors

How do you keep the unwanted creatures out?

We've had raccoons, possums. and squirrels on our back steps - and I would prefer that they stay outside.

I have wondered about that. Keep snacks outside away from the door. Maybe they will be content on the treats and leave for a nap

We've never had a problem with wild critters. We did have a cat come thru one once. Which for a house with 3 dogs with high prey drive is NOT a good thing. But he was a very calm cat. I saw him coming down the long upstairs hall and just got up and shut the door behind my husband who picked him up and took him outside. Dogs didn't even realize what was going on.

some of them have a device on the dogs collar that will only let them. if a rascal runs in ith them, well, then you have a problem. Look into that kind of door.

I had a friend who had possums coming through the pet door. She said they made a huge mess, but it wasn't as bad as when the skunk came in.

We have one that is electronic. You can program it for when they can come in or go out. They wear a chip on a collar. No other animal can get in without the chip. I think my husband ordered it from "The Pet Dr." If you type in electronic pet door, maybe you can find one.

we livein country and with dogs 'running' we don't put collars on them as we don't want them to get hung up anywhere. And we sure don't want pet doors as we do get raccoons, possums, and lately armadillos--which I just HATE. Ugh!
Also, I have a friend with a pet door that also lives in the country and she's had snakes in the house--and thinks it's through the pet door! Yikes!

I had 2 older mini schnauzers that have crossed over the rainbow bridge. In their last years, we bought a doggie door that was electronic and was only supposed to open for them. The loud noises it made when locking scared them and neither would have anything to do with it. The boy did try it a several times and got hung up in it twice. There was no way to release the one we had, so I had to pull his foot out as he was crying. The next day it got took out and a doggie door with a regular swing door and a plastic piece that would lock it at night was installed. Life was good again.

With a baying beagle... I've had a doggie door for 17 years and have never had a problem with any unwanted creatures coming into the house. I know my beagle would sound the alarm if they tried.

I did have one of my beagles try to drag a rabbid skunk into the house through the doggie door one time. Fortunately, a contractor at the house stopped her before it was all the way in.
