I'm working on quilts for both my sons and their girls with pillowcases to match. The pillow cases will be just standard size but also with some added flair for the girls.

I made one for my son a few summers ago when he went off to be a camp counselor. He said he liked that it was personal, had my writing on it, and it was nice to have both the one that matched his sheets and the one I made because he sometimes wanted or needed to change just the pillowcase mid-week, not the whole set.

I change pillowcases mid-week or more often myself. I'd appreciate a personalized one. Monograms are always special for married couples. I just finished making a set of 20x20 (each of their first initials) and a 14x14 (their last initial) for newlyweds in the family. They love them.

I wouldn't make pillowcases just to use up scraps or if I knew they don't appreciate handmade gifts. You have to know your recipient.

Color is very personal. If you can find out their bedroom colors that'd be better than going with pastel, in my opinion. You could go with creme and grey which is classy and contemporary if you just don't know. That would blend with a soothing palette or calm a loud one. That's my two cents' (or a plug nickel's) worth of suggestions.

My older sister is a nun and I often have a hard time finding the right gifts for her. Last year for Christmas, I made her a pair of patchwork pillowcases and she loved them! Last year I made pillowcases for my 19 year old niece for all 5 pillows in her bed--including a body pillow and she was also delighted

I make pillowcases to match the quilt and place the quilt inside the pillowcase when I give it to the recipient. I feel storing the quilt inside the pillowcase allows the quilt to breath yet keeps it from getting as dirty while stored. Plus I use up some of the scraps leftover from the quilt itself. Just an idea.

We like to use our personalized pillowcases when we travel. That way I notice my pillow on the bed and I don't leave it behind.

I think pillowcases are a good idea. You know the people you are giving them to so keep in mind their hobbies or even ask them if they have fav colors. With all the really neat material available you can really make very unique gifts. My sisters grandson wanted me to take him out shopping for pillowcases and I told him I could make him ones. He had a ball digging thru my stash and picking out material. I made him 2 but he has about 4 more coming to him. Last year I made Christmas ones for me and my sister's granddaughter. Just keep in mind that people who don't sew love just about any handmade gift they are given.
