Has anyone used the plastic bobbins in their singer 401? I can get twice as many as the metal, but I do not want to waste my money if it does not work as well.

The recommendation by the "experts" on here is to use metal bobbins in the all metal machines. They just work better.

The ONLY time I've used plastic bobbins successfully is with the New Home Memorycraft (now Janome) I bought in the early 1990s. My daughter has it now; I can't even remember the model#. When I went to get some more bobbins for her as a gift, the dealeer told me that they always use the plastic ones for the Janomes. I use only Bernina metal ones now in my Bernie 1031.

I've always been told to get metal bobbins even with my Singer machine that I had.

Wrong....it's metal for metal bobbin cased machines and plastic for plastic ones. And, if you use metal ones in plastic cased machines they can and will cut into the plastic causing you a nice repair bill.

My Janome 9000, plastic bobbins....vintage Singers, metal bobbins. Though, the metal bobbins sold at Joannes and WallyWorld are not all created equal.

I use the Janome plastic bobbins made especially for my 6600P.

I use whatever type bobbins orginally came with the machines, plastic bobbins in my Gem Gold and Pfaff and metal in my old Brother and white Featherweight.

I use the plastic bobbins in my Singer 401, and they work just fine.
