1/2" difference.....

A bit of trivia.....the other day one of my bathrooms needed a sully of tp......so I got a few rolls from stash. These were the "new" mega rolls.. On the dispenser was the remnants of a "regular" roll. When I was replacing, I looked at the actual tissue, and thought, hmm....one looks a bit narrower than the other...so I did a comparison. Sure enough! The regular roll's paper width is almost 1/2" wider than the new "mega" roll. Don't remember which brands I was comparing, if that makes a difference, don't know, but it was an interesting moment.........so here again we have a bit less of product.

I became aware of this about a year ago. All brands have gone smaller
Also some newspapers.

leonf 09-06-2018 09:01 AM

I hate using newspapers. Too scratchy.

susiequilt 09-06-2018 09:14 AM

I'm convinced that the "mega" means mega profits not size for the company!

:D:D:D I still remember the old Sears catalogue in the out house and it wasn’t for reading.

Wasn't the Sears Catalogue printed on coated paper? Ouch!! That must have hurt!! Non-absorbent, too. Yikes!

When I had my first experience with an outhouse nobody told me NOT to use the shiny pages with pictures. Nobody told me to wrinkle up the page first. It's a wonder I didn't break my arm when it slid up to my waist in the back or have blood loss from the paper cuts.

OMG!! you guys are too gross, funny but gross.

I guess I had it good, indoor plumbing. :)

Chasing Hawk 09-06-2018 03:55 PM

I prefer my TP soft and fluffy, that Scott brand is like what they use at rest stops.

Pat M. 09-06-2018 05:42 PM

Try a catalog, Sears

Anniedeb 09-06-2018 05:45 PM

We can't use those mega rolls! Both bathrooms have built in ceramic tile toilet paper holders. The mega's are too big and won't fit into the holders. We bought a package, and had to leave the rolls off the holder until they got thin enough to fit!!

Every medical family member has said they can tell when a patient uses Charmin toilet paper. They always say "I bet you use Charmin" and the answer is always yes I do. LOL Charmin leaves lint!

mamagrande 09-06-2018 08:34 PM

Needed this laugh tonight...So funny but i do remember the newspaper. I remember a friend saying she sometimes had to use leaves...I said you do know some are poisonous.

Or itchy!!

Back to the toilet paper rolls, I have found that the cardboard roll itself is larger diameter now, too, on some brands, so that saves the manufacturer a bit.

If I remember correctly, we would remove a page, wad it up and and scrunch it to soften it before using. As kids, we never used the toy section, but always left it open when leaving.

You all are too funny! ;)

better than corncobs...

We're not supposed to notice when products get smaller and the price continues to go up. What really irks me is when the size of products decreases and it affects food recipes that call for certain ounces, etc.

Peckish 09-08-2018 03:20 PM

Graham crackers got smaller. The box is still the same size, but the crackers are smaller and I believe there are less crackers in each packet.

Jingle 09-08-2018 06:06 PM

We use Charmin, not the linty one, I noticed when they "improved" it. It was an inch or more shorter and yes roll is bigger. I have noticed Oreo original cookies are thinner and smaller in original package it is very easy because the package is baggy. I have noticed some others that are smaller, same package probably all of them cost more.
My big gripe is leave them all the same size and just raise the price. They (companies) think we are too stupid to notice, very insulting. I am buying more generic products, same size and taste good.

quilterpurpledog 09-09-2018 03:39 AM

The change that most annoyed me was the big indentation in the bottom of salad dressing 'quart' jars. Of course, we could mention the weight of coffee cans.

LOL. I think you made my day!

SusieQOH 09-24-2018 01:10 PM

leonf- as usual you are a hoot! :D

An FYI about generic brand foods: My sister makes a certain cake that calls for Pistachio pudding. One time she made the cake and it was a flop! She couldn't figure out why but then realized she bought the generic brand of pudding instead of the name brand by mistake.
Sometimes it does matter, but lots of times not.

nativetexan 09-26-2018 11:38 AM

oh goodness, coffee went astray decades ago. same size cans but less coffee. then all things joined in on that.

So do I!!!

Boston1954 09-29-2018 05:53 AM

When I was a kid, the tuna fish was 7 oz. Now it is 5 or 4.5 in the same sized can. And that half gallon of ice cream is not a half gallon either. It's very irritating.

rusty quilter 10-01-2018 11:54 AM

All of the years were we were told, inflation in down....no---prices did not rise....products inside...just got smaller! Define inflation!

leonf 10-02-2018 07:46 AM

And paper Cracker Jack surprises... booo.

Macybaby 10-03-2018 04:18 AM

Our local butcher shop sells hamburger by the package and it seems like a great price. Until my husband weighed one and it's 13oz not 16oz. when you figure price per lb, they were the same as everyone else.

However, DH and I have found using 13oz meat vs 16 oz does not cause any problems.

I have a lot of older recipes that call for using specific size cans, but most work fine using a bit less. I'm not going to buy two 14oz cans of pineapple so I can have 16oz to put in my cake.
