The year is 1910
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for the Year 1910:

************ ********* ************

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.

Fuel for a car was sold in drug stores only.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !

The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME.

Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which

Were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard.'

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.

The Five leading causes of death were:

1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas , Nevada , was only 30!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and

Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores.

Back then pharmacists said, 'Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind,

Regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health'

( Shocking? DUH! )

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !

Wow! I remember washtub bathtubs and outhouses, pumping water outside and heating it on the stove for a bath, cooking on a wood stove and washing my hair once a week (more was considered UNhealthy). This was at my grandmother's house until 1970, when she passed.

CoyoteQuilts 08-01-2010 02:38 PM

Shocking isn't it? It's just like anybody over the age of about 35 and many of our mothers either smoked or drank alcohol when pregnant with us.....

BKinCO 08-01-2010 02:41 PM

Wow. Those are some amazing statistics!!! Thanks for sharing!

GASP!!!!!!!!!!!!

nativetexan 08-01-2010 05:13 PM

22 cents per hour! and i thought making $1.68 an hour was great back in 1967! still, i wonder how people live on minimum wage these days.

fabric-holic 08-01-2010 05:14 PM

I don't want to be indelicate but they didn't have feminine products either.
My grandmothers and aunts told me they had to make their own reusable ones.
And I think there was no income tax till WWI or around then.
Oh wouldn't that be nice?

sueisallaboutquilts 08-01-2010 05:19 PM

Ditter, I really would have liked a servant/maid :D
Very interesting read!!

My grandmother would be 102 & she told us she remembered when they were 1st made. Greatgrandmother ordered them from Kansas City. How nice to have to throw them away. Can you imagine these little missys today having to wash them like they did long ago. Thus where the term "rag" can into being.Makes you really appreciate modern inventions.

When i was 11 or 12 yrs old my Mother asked me if I had a belt. duh! of course i had a belt! not the kind she meant but how was I to know? jeesh. talk about not talking to your children. turned out i didn't need the 'belt' till i was 14.

My mother didn't tell me jack about anything. I would read her ladies magazines & saw the ads for stuff & finally when I pressured her she told me what it was all about. Never a sex talk, nothing. When I was going to get married she told me to go buy some birthcontrol & a douche bag. Never said what for either. Man it's a wonder I grew up. When my DD came along I made sure she was well informed about everything. She didn't have to learn it on the streets. I was not going to do my kids like my parents did me. Some things from the past might be nice but I love my modern conveiences

mayday 02-18-2012 09:25 AM

wonderful, thanks Ditter,a different slower world ,remember a lot ,especially being told that tiresome babies had their dummies dipped in Laudanum----which as with you opium was not that controlled and easily purchased!!!!!!

nativetexan 02-18-2012 10:09 AM

that makes you stop and think. Both my parents were around then. well my Mother was born 1917, but still.
I sometimes wish we could go back to the 1950's myself. Such a simplier time!! the good old days.

ptquilts 02-18-2012 03:33 PM

Some of us who do quilting still work for 22 cents per hour !

bjrusty 02-18-2012 03:39 PM
