Loved the video..brought back memories of my Home Ec..class ..all four years of high school..graduated in 1960..oh my that was a long time ago..but wouldn't take anything for what all we were taught...use those skills all the time...

Loved Home Ec. 1970-1973! Wish they would bring it back. I know many of you young ladies and gentlemen know how to cook and sew, but I feel, the newer generation isn't being taught basic skills for survival . In my experience's they wait until someone will do it for them or go buy fast food. Many would say what's wrong with that! I have had girls in their 20's visit my home that don't know how to peal a potato and cook it. Recently one was amazed you could wash, poke holes and cook one in the microwave. I taught my sons enough about cooking that they have become the main cook in their home. Cooking, sewing and even cleaning can be very rewarding in my opinion!

Thank you for the link. I passed it on to our fashion design staff here at the university. Although attitudes have changed the principles of design, embellishment of garments and the love of those featherweight machines lingers on. Interesting that the "girls" put on a fashion show to raise money for the "boys basketball team". Our students put on two shows each year of clothing they have designed and sewn but the profits, ($8,000 - $15,0000) goes to charity. Fully student run and student organized. Some traditions are not lost, just updated. Thanks for the video!

And did you notice the machine she was using? That little featherweight with it's own table. LOL I made most of the kids clothes with they were little and still make all my husband's shirts. Grew up with grandmother and mom sewing, I learned on GM's treadle. Took home ec in the 50's, just a day or to ago. LOL

Sadly, I only took one home-ec class and that was under duress (Momma insisted)... fortunately had a wonderful teacher (she was one of my all-time favorites)! I resisted all types of domestication then, but have come 180 degrees since those days!!

I remember the 13" from the floor skirt hems. When I started to teach, if you knelt on the floor & your skirt did not touch the floor, you got sent home. Can you imagine that happening wth today's kids
