I'd like to know myself. I'll be watching for an answer.

I wasn't sure, so I Googled it:

I will give it a shot.

If you use a hash tag in a post it can be tracked. It helps people who care to track when and where people are talking about a subject.

It seems to have started with Twitter as a form of short hand for searching about a subject. #quiltingboard would bring up Tweets related to quilting board.

This link helps explain it. http://www.techforluddites.com/2013/...ou-use-it.html

Thanks for the explanation Tothill. I have wondered about this too.

It started with Twitter, so I've been ignoring it until now. However, it's starting to show up on Facebook, Pinterest, and other social networking sites.

I'm semi-old fashioned and don't use anything other than FB. No smart phone, no twitter. Don't like tracking but it's almost impossible to avoid it if you use the internet.

"Hashtag", hmmm? I must be getting pretty old. I remember when "#" meant "pound.":D

I figure I've lived without hashtags up to now and can go right on living without them. But I do realize that I'm really getting to be an old curmudgeon!
