Are any of you WW2 veterans or the children or spouse of one of them? If so, the last AARP Bullitin (p.6) announced if they were serving in Japan (and saw the mushroom cloud of the bomb) or in or near Ariz. when nuclear testing was being done you stand to be eligible for a one time benefit of $75,000. Lots of those vets died from cancer...my dad was one of them and my 94 year old mother just may get that benefit. (You can call 800-729-7327) I am personally glad I am an AARP member. I get a lot of good information through them and I do write my congressmen regarding social security, etc. There are benefits but I rarely use them..20% at Denney's (don't even know where one is located) 10% off hotel bills, etc. I just ask for Senior discounts when I have work done at my home or when I make a big purchase. (like tires!!! new washer, sewing machine, etc)

Don't waste your money. They do not represent the seniors they sell to. They supported the healthcare bill which has reduced medical care and raised medicare rates and insurance rates. MOST RETAILERS/RESTAURANTS ETC. WILL GIVE YOU A DISCOUNT IF YOU ARE A SENIOR.....you don't need the AARP card..just ask.

We are not going to renew our membership.

We were members for many years, then decided to not renew when they supported Obamacare & weren't honest about the "fine print' . A few months later, they sent us a letter telling us they missed us and offered us free membership thru our credit card and sent us the member cards and everything. We were never billed for the membership and wouldn't pay for it anyway. We use to get that magazine once a month, but don't anymore. We have only once in all the years we have been members been able to use the discount when traveling. Most places have a seniors discount anyway, so I don't see the advantage of the membership. Our auto insurance is thru Hartford, which is promoted by AARP but when I asked, they said the insurance they offer is for people over 55 so you could get it anyway. So, bottom line, when this membership time period runs out, we won't renew.

I agree with DH. I was a member when it was $8.00 and I never did get any discounts or anything worthwhile with the membership card. It started going up and still does so I dropped it. I guess you have to weight the pros and cons. If you travel a lot you might be justified to keep it. I don't and it is a waste to me.

I decided not to renew mine either. Only got 2 discounts in the last 15 years, so I hope they stop sending me all the stuff they mail out what a waste.

We have our Medicare Supplement insurance through AARP and it is wonderful! The price is not too high because we are members. It would be much higher elsewhere. Therefore, although we are not travelers who take advantage of other offers of AARP, the membership is well worth it to us.

They don't sell the insurance. Ours is through United Healthcare. However, we could not get what we have if we were not AARP members. It would be much more expensive.

I had belonged to them, but, did not benefit much. Not worth it to me, and like quiltingninasue I feel the same way.
