One day, our Scottish Terrier broke his chain to run after the Akita. When he got there I don't know who was the most afraid, the Scottie who realized the Akita's foot was as big as he was, or the poor Japanese man who was about ready to let go the rope and run!

Oh that is sooo funny.

Last night I went to dinner with our work group, and one man was telling of his investigations for insurance companies. He said there was a higher premium for insurance when people owned one of a list of dogs, and I'm sure that an Akita was on that list. So do check with your insurance company about this.

Also my cop brother and son years ago told me to remove the signs we had up that said "Guard Dog On Duty" and put up one in its place saying "Large dog on premises" which I believe legally will be better for you. The first one says you KNOW your dog is vicious, the other one just comments that you have a dog. Perhaps someone else on this forum can chime in here, I'm in CA so laws could be and probably are different in other states.
When the law allows a crook who breaks into a house and gets hurt to sue the homeowner, that's when our personal safety gets compromised and we have to really be careful.

I'm in CA and I do know that some insurances are charging you extra for particular breeds, but not ours, in fact, they don't even ask you if you HAVE a dog.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I am in the UK so laws and insurance are a little different. We are taking out pet insurance which will also give us public indemnity insurance.

Thorn has arrived! He is 3, not the 6 we were told, years old.

He settled down well last night and is making himself at home. As I type this he is chewing a large bone. I have already socialised him with the small children next door as he has been in a home with children previously.

Thorn is cuddly on his terms and has been brought up well. I feel reasonably confident that he will soom feel at home and be a great addition to our family.

As soon as I get a chance I will take some photos of my handsome boy and post them here for you to admire.

Again, thank you for your comments,

Sue

Akita are lovely Loyal powerful dogs ; they require a confident owner, and will get into trouble ( like all dogs) if they aren't properly socialized and trained. Be the Alpha (Loving and firm)and you'll do alright.
