Alert! Pay your bills!

I got an email this morning from the Collections at E Z Pass, saying I was in arrears with my payments for tolls and that they had repeatedly sent notice. To please click on the attachment to see my invoice. Well DUH!! We don't even have any toll roads in my little ole town nor in my state, that I'm aware of. There will be some people who will ''click'' it and end up with a bad intruder in their computer. Just putting the warning out there.

They are always phishing aren't they?

mandyrose 08-22-2014 10:46 AM

is there anything that these scammers don't cover ugh! do you see the tv commericals for back and knee braces and if you are on medicare to call the number and have your medicare card ready ad these braces are little to no cost to you and call this number yada yada well I get a newsletter from my health insurance every month and they said that medicare has nothing to do with these companies to deal with your doctor directly and to think you call and give them your personal info and nobody knows who or where these braces come from another scam

DACO48 08-22-2014 10:53 AM

Doesn't that just chap your hide??

There was a news report of a woman I believe out of Houston or Austin who actually got a bill like that and she owed it. She happened to be driving in the wrong lane at the wrong time. Confused. But I received an alert also and the way it was sent, I knew it was a phish/scam/virus. Deleted it. They're using some of these news articles to produce their scams.

They never seem to miss a chance to rip us off. I don't drive anymore so I would mostly likely have a good laugh since I don't own a car.

We have EZ pass but have the auto replenish set up with Amex. My beef with them is actually with the State of DE. We go through a couple of tolls in DE a few times a year - on the shore route. EVERY time, we get a notice from DE stating that we owe tolls. All of our vehicles and trailers are registered w/EZ Pass. Every time we get the notice, I have to wait for the EZ pass statement; copy; mail with violations notice back to DE. Then get a statement from them to the effect 'oh, never mind'. What a waste of paper/postage. No other EZ pass toll that we use do we EVER have this issue - just DE. Guess I'll just keep copying/mailing.

There is now a bridge in Boston, MA (the Tobin Bridge) that you HAVE to use EZPass to pay the toll - no other option. There are no toll booths for cash anymore! If you don't have EZPass, they mail you a bill and ADD a surcharge to the toll!!! This surcharge is in addition to having to pay postage to mail check or money order to pay the toll. Get real, Massachusetts! There are some folks who don't need EZPass or don't want EZPass. Just another way for the government to get into our lives....Grrr.

In our area they are calling to tell you that you are in arrears on your electricity bill and you must pay it NOW over the phone with your trusty credit card or your electricity will be cut off immediately....Both newspaper and TV are telling people not to do that as they are phishing.

Stitchit123 08-23-2014 06:59 AM

BEWARE of e/mails from PayPal - re:intend to close acct/arrears this is how it looks-I do not have a PP acct. Also be careful downloading those games on FaceBook A friend of mine has a 12 yo daughter who down loaded a FB game on my computer My entire system got infected It took 9 hours to undo the damage and $250 .

cashs_mom 08-23-2014 07:14 AM

Thanks, mermaid. Hackers will try anything. I've learned not to click any links on emails. If I need to look at my account, I close my browser, reopen and go directly to the account in question. Keeps things safer that way

calla 08-23-2014 08:13 AM

I didn't know what EZ Pass was, googled it, thank you, it is always good to learn something new.............remember be kind and everyone isn't on the same page...........

QUILTNMO 08-23-2014 10:27 AM

thsnkd for warning we dont have tolls here either

kydeb 08-23-2014 11:12 AM

I just wish I had half of the money that I have "won" in foreign lotteries!! LOL

Roberta 08-23-2014 11:15 AM

I had my identity and debit card info stolen and used at a Shell station to buy food. Such a hassle to correct something like this, notify bank, cancel card, notify people I pay with automatic deductions from my account plus a trip to the Police Station in Augusta to fill out a police report.

The gas station says they have the guy on surveillance so we'll see where that goes. People, be really careful. I've had my card compromised at least 4 times because of major security flaws with retailers but the first time they actually charged something to my card. Thank goodness it was only $10.70. Next time they try I'm sure it would be for more if they got away with it this time.

The telemarketers are getting smarter too these days. They have now found a way to make it look like your own phone number is calling you but they didn't spell my last name correct so I knew something was up. I get a call from telemarketers most everyday if not twice a day using either my phone number or someone in town's. As they come thru I put them on "Blocked" but I'm starting to run out of room. I'm also on the "no call" list but that doesn't seem to be helping these days. Yesterday I decided to listen to their speel and clicked on the number they stated to talk with a real person. I immediatedly explained that I told them the last time to take me off their phone list and that I was on the "no call" list. She preceeded to hang up before I could finish my sentence. I was not rude either just precise of what the problem was.....................THEM!!!!! As most of the phone calls are recordings it won't help to report them and the fact they've learned to go thru the phone system so you can't see their real phone # I just tend to ignore the calls most times.

If anyone has any other suggestions I'm all ears.

We have EZ Pass and use it occasionally when we travel. Ours is paid and up to date. My husband recognized this as a complete scam and reported it as such. You just can't be too careful.

We go to Philadelphia, PA from Virginia Beach, VA a couple times a year and get the same notices from DE every time. We jump through their hoops and get the same never mind letter. Wish they'd get it straight but it's good to know that it's not just us! Lol

I keep getting them also and we don't have toll roads in Alaska. I just delete them.

This isn't just in Mass. We have it here on some of our tunnels, you can either pre-pay with EZpass or it'll scan you license plate and send you a bill. They advertised and let everyone know in advance what the fees would be at different times of the day and if you don't have the ezpay. I opted for the ezpay because I go across it about once a month but I don't have it set up on the auto refil because I don't use it that often. I just go up and check it every once in a while. When my daughter got her bill for the tunnel (she does not have ezpay) it was just under $5 but said if she didn't pay it by the end of the month it would be 25 late fee.

My E-Z pass is automatically replenished via my Visa so I know anything from them would be a scam.

Here are two potential scams we keep getting - (1) calls about our PSE&G bill (electricity/gas company). I live in a co-op and we don't get a bill, it's included in our monthly maintenance. (2) A recent call by my husbant to his insurance company opened with a free offer for a personal safety alert system, you know, you push a button around your neck if you're in need. Since we've been thinking about getting one for him he listened to the pitch, then put me on the phone. I found out it's a company that is not associated in any way with our insurance company. It was a hard sell - he could get this free with low montly fee only with this phone call, as soon as she gets our information a unit would be shipped right out. She also said the number we'd called was the wrong one and once she had our order she could give us a new number for the insurance company. We hung up, he dialed again (same number), got his insurance company and explained what had just happened. The customer service person had no idea what we were talking about and said it would be investigated. How the alarm system company had been able to cut into a legitimate major insurance company's number is a mystery. We haven't heard anything further but it's another warning to be super careful with anything that doesn't seem quite right.

After reading these pagers of comments I just got a Spam email about the EZ pass. So guess it has tagged onto the messages, not too happy about that tracking.
