Pure kindness, or smart marketing?

I remember having at least one dress made out of a flour sack. It was a beautiful print with pretty purple flowers. After all these years I still remember it.

Better than burlap underwear.

I had many, the best was a gathered red and white flowered skirt with a red blouse my grandmother made. I wore it on dance day 3rd and 4th grade.

My mother made additional dresses for my "Saucy Walker" doll out of these flour sacks. I still have the doll, her original clothes plus these flour sack dresses.

I don't remember printed flour sacks (maybe it was an American thing) but my Grandmother and my Mom used the white flour sacks for tea towels. And the better quality (higher thread count probably) sugar sacks were used for Sunday tea towels. I remember embroidering my share and I think I even had some in my Hope Chest!

Very interesting article. Good marketing by the flour company too. My grandmother used many flour sacks to make aprons and dresses.

When my oldest daughter was 6 my grandmother made a full sized bedspread/quilt out of feed sacks, for my daughter's room. I looked for the pic but of course so many years ago, can't find it. I do still have a quilt my mother-in-law made us out of wash cloths you used to get in washing power boxes. That was over 50 years ago.
