Made a couple of tater bags using the warm tater batting but they are so thick compared to ones i have seen at a a quilt show. they used a very thin 100 percent batting. but was curious cuz i thought i had read this on another post - can you use flannel as batting for these??? also i thought i had read where someone used flannel for the insides??? sorry i keep going on about these. i love my tater bags but they just seem sooo thick to try and sew - let alone try quilting on them!

I just bought a kit for one at my LQS ($4). I don't know the brand of batting but it is 100% cotton, very thin with muslin for lIning and the potato fabric. Not as thick as many quilts I've worked on. I know there is a named batting that has been listed in many instructions. From this kit my assumption is the important thing is for the batting to be 100% cotton & natural. So maybe switch out the batting? The potato baking instructions with mine say do not pierce the potatoes and micro for 10 min. So the bag would need to be able to create a "steam cocoon" that would bake the spuds without allowing them to explode. I'm not sure flannel would do this. I'll be watching this thread for those with "spud bag experience" to weigh in!

I have made several and used scraps of flannel as the batting, they work wonderfully.

I would think any batting would be fine, as long as it is truly 100% cotton.
Since most flannel is, go for it :D:D:D

Interested to learn more. When I bought my kit they were adamant you must use the "right" batting or risk a fire in your microwave.

Have the kit and yet to make. Mine has a great realistic corn fabric as I'll probably use it for that more than the potatoes!



Question ... being a newbie (and not really there yet being that I haven't made it yet) ..... how many potatoes or ears of corn do you cook at a time in one bag? Fill it up? or not?
