I made large snowmen from our children's old white "hobnail" bedspreads. Not exactly chenille, but close. I used an actual stocking hat and a piece of bright wool for a neck scarf. Large black buttons for eyes. The kids put them out in the winter, so I guess they're ok looking. Chenille would work and if you want the ragged look, you could sew front and back with seam on outside, as I did. I think I cut a pattern from newspaper and tried it on junk fabric first.
