Any food handling quirks?

I love Pepperidge Farm bread. The loaves are actually, I think, half loaves (they probably cook huge loaves and bag each half for sale.) Because I am no fan of bread heels, I take the bread out of the bag (in its inner cellophane wrapping,) flip it over and put it back in the bag with the cut end uppermost and the heel at the bottom.

My husband chuckles every time he sees me do this. I am convinced I am not the only one who has some foibles about food. Anyone else??

:DThe bread crusts are my favourite slice. One of my things is I like my food separate on my plate. I don't freak out if anything touches but I don't mix my food. Yes I know it all gets mixed up in my stomach but I like each separate flavor when I eat.

I used to use the heels of bread to make bread crumbs until I saw my grandmother make a sandwich and turn the heel side of the bread to the inside of the sandwich. Once the sandwich was assembled, you couldn't tell it was a heel. I smacked myself upside the head for not thinking of that!

Here's a funny story... a few years ago, I was making sandwiches for my younger son and myself. My older son walked in and asked me to make him a sandwich, also. When he saw how little bread was left, he insisted that I not give him the "hoof" of the bread, because he doesn't like the hoof. My younger son and I laughed and laughed and laughed!!! :D

I'm with Tarten I can't stand my food toughing, for the same reasons.
i have to eat savory to sweet. like if we go to ihop, the eggs and bacon first the French toast or pancakes last.
Sometimes, ill eat all of one food first, beans first, potato next meat last. (My stomach is paralyzed, have to take food to digest, and meat takes about 2 days, so i eat in easily digestible order)

I thought you meant food handling like in being sanitary! I have a lot of quirks about that. But I don't care if my food touches each other, unless it's the main course touching the dessert. That's icky.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 07-01-2014 07:06 PM

I turn the end slices of bread "inside out", too, when I make sandwiches.

TexasSunshine 07-01-2014 07:18 PM

The heel is my favorite part of the bread, espicially fresh hot bread.

I hate the inner cellophane wrapper-it always bunches up and gets in the way. I take it out--once I FINALLY get it open.

I remember reading a story about a young woman who wanted to do the big family Easter dinner. She planned to cook a ham, and asked her mother for instructions. Mom said to cut the end of the ham off, place it in the roaster, cover it , and cook for so many minutes per pound. When the dinner time came, she arranged it on a platter, garnished it, and served it to the family. It was a hit, and she received many compliments. After the meal, she, her mother, and her grandmother were cleaning up the kitchen. The young woman thanked her mom for the help. She also had a question: "Why do you cut the end off the ham?" Her mom said, "I don't know; my mom always did." She asked her grandmother why, and her grandmother said, "Because I didn't have a roaster big enough--I cut it off so it would fit in my pan."

Sometimes we do things just because we always have. :)

I don't like Cole slaw, it is one of the few things my Mom made that I won't eat.
But my husband says my Cole slaw is the best he has ever tasted.

I make it, then let it set for about 2 hours, he tastes it. And if it needs something he tells me. :)

I won't eat Macaroni salad, ham salad or chicken salad. From what I understand she makes the best.

BTW, my Cole slaw recipe is from my Mom.

I don't like fruit salads because I don't like the various fruits touching. They alter each other's flavors and not in a goog way in my opinion. So I totally understand the folks that do not like their food to touch.

When i was first married - like 2 weeks married, my MIL told me that my husband's favorite piece of toast were the ones made from the ends of the loaf. So I very carefully took the new loaf out of the bag and and toasted them for my husband. He asked me why he got the crusts when he knew we must bought bread the day before. When I told him that his mother told me this was his favorite toast, he let me know that it wasn't and she used to give him the ends because she didn't like them. 41 years later we still laugh over it. Now we save the ends up in the freezer and use them for dressing when I bake a turkey or chicken. Actually I do love the ends toasted when I am making soft boiled eggs.

I watched a friend once, making a sub sandwich, cutting open a long roll and pulling out the inside part, saying, "This part is not good for you." Hmmmm, it all comes from the same dough!!

That's what I thought too, and I don't really know that I have any quirks about any foods, except how some of them are cooked, like boiled okra.....UGH!!!! But I love fried okra.

Sew Freak 07-03-2014 04:58 AM

Debbie JJ, I LOVE okra...both fried or boiled, or in gumbo. We moved to WA state in 2009, and cannot for the life of me find fresh okra. No one here likes it, or so I'm told. I think in the five years we've been here, I found fresh okra one time at an outside fruit/vegetable stand. So, when we travel to TX during summer months, I eat all I can, well...I try! We plan to move back to TX when our house sells, and when we do, we are planting OKRA!

I have never enjoyed making cupcakes. I do it but I don't like all the drippings of the batter on my cupcake tins. And I try and try to get the exact amount of batter on my spoon to drop into the tin but I never ever get it right !

Sewnoma 07-03-2014 07:33 AM

Funny...in my family we call the end pieces of bread "butt bread". Not very appetizing, is it? I don't like eating the butt bread; I used to feed it to my dogs until I got a dog with a wheat sensitivity and he got hugely bloated from it & my vet told me that lots of dogs have trouble digesting wheat. Now I don't feed wheat anything to any of my dogs. DH will rescue the butt bread for sandwiches but I just don't like it and he can't have wheat now. I should do more crumb-topped casseroles or something to use them up.

Trying to think of other weird food things I do...when I cook fresh broccoli I skin the woody parts of the stem away and cook up the core of the stem, DH thinks that's bizarre but I love fresh broccoli and don't want to waste a single morsel!

When I slice onions, I periodically rinse my knife and the uncut part of the onion bulb under cool water. Again, DH thinks I'm crazy but I swear it cuts down on how much my eyes water.

Tomatoes - if I'm going to be dicing a lot of tomatoes I dunk them in an ice water bath for awhile first, so they're firmer and easier to cut. I learned that from working fast food, of all things.

I get annoyed if DH grates cheese right off the block and leaves grater-marks behind. No real reason for it, I just don't like it!

zennia 07-03-2014 08:18 AM

My only quirk is i love all vegetables by themselves. Mix them together and I can't eat them. Corn is my favorite veggies but not mixed in anything else.

Stitchit123 07-03-2014 09:49 AM

The only 4 things I refuse to eat is Okra - its slimy --Hominy & Malt-O-Meal they just look gross and Yogurt -only because I can't get pass the name. My family thinks I'm a bit odd about the handling of raw meat. If I can't use a fork or tongs to re-pack or cook it I use disposable gloves.and still wash my hands a couple times before and after.

Peckish 07-03-2014 09:57 AM

When I was a child, the dad of the family that lived next door to us refused to eat rice because it reminded him of maggots.

ptquilts 07-03-2014 10:08 AM

I was at a church supper and when people went back for seconds, they did not all get clean plates. Grosses me out. Germs go from your mouth to your plate via fork, then the server goes tap-tap on your dirty plate with the serving spoon, then puts it back in the dish. I couldn't think of a polite way to say anything at the moment.

Doggramma 07-03-2014 10:53 AM

Don't get me going on sanitation! I saw someone at the grocery store wearing plastic gloves, but then was scratching their nose with their glove. Why are people so unsanitary?

DogHouseMom 07-03-2014 10:53 AM

On of my quirks about bread is that I will not store (or buy bread sold in) plastic wrapping. I like bread with a crust on it and if it's stored in plastic the crust goes soft or even soggy if the bread was packaged while still warm.

Good crusty bread needs to be stored in paper. It's becoming increasingly difficult to find, even in "bread specialty" places. For example I went to Panera Bread recently and ordered a Sour Dough Round - unsliced. The clerk attempted to put it into a plastic bag and I told her no way .. PAPER. I had to explain to her why. Really. A bread shop should know better.

I somehow arrange my food so that I finish the last bite with a little bit of everything on my plate. As far as food preparation quirks, I have to have very clean hands and a clean kitchen to work in. My daughters laugh at me for this but they too have picked up this habit and comment if they go somewhere that does not practice this. They have gone without eating while visiting if the kitchen was not clean. Or they cleaned it themselves under the guise of helping the hostess. Weird.

My guess as to why you don't find fresh okra in WA is it doesn't get hot enough for it to grow. Okra likes the heat of TX. I love a mess of pan fried okra.

Good idea about the tomatoes, especially if they're very ripe, which is when I really love them! About the onions, I read somewhere that if you make your very 1st cut from the root end, then you won't cry as much. I tried it, and it works for me.......:) I make this 1st cut to start peeling the onion on the root end and just keep cutting from that end.

About three times a year, I'll be in the produce section and someone will sneeze on the vegetables - and not even attempt to cover their face. And every single dad-gum time it's been a man!! I've got to come up with a snappy comment to make. Maybe Sandygirl can help me, she usually comes up with good one-liners. :D
