Anyone been to Colonial Williamsburg??
 

My dh and I will travel there during the first week in December. There are many tours so a little overwhelming. Which tour would you recommend for our first visit? (We are seniors.) THX

I have been there numerous times but never taken a tour and am not sure what you mean. The village itself is quite a bit of walking but there are plenty of places to sit and such. It can easily be enjoyed without an organized group or leader. Each of the main buildings have presentations that are very interesting. We ate once in one of the taverns where they were serving a traditional colonial meal and I thought it was over priced for what you got and not that good. I have attended one of their plays and it was excellent so you might want to look into that. I love Wiliamsburg. It is truly a gem.

Colonial Williamsburg at Christmas time is wonderful!! Decorations of the period, caroling through the streets, cider and hot chocolate - we really loved it, got us in the true spirit of the season. Enjoy, dress in layers for the weather and wear gloves.

Ditto - we had a great time. Didn't do a tour really didn't see a need for one. Haven't been there in the winter. So much to see in the shops and just the buildings, streets etc I wouldn't want someone telling me "it's time to move on" we like to stroll. Have a great time.

I went to Colonial Williamsburg many many years ago, and we enjoyed it immensely without any tours. Of course, things can change. I just wanted to mention how much I enjoyed the display of colonial or colonial style quilts that was there. (This was sometime in the early 70s, I must admit) I still have the photographs of those quilts, and you've inspired me to get them out and look at them again - quilting was only on my bucket list back then -- too many other priorities to attend to, but I was nurturing my dream even back then!

I've been there many times. There is no need to book a tour. The colonial part doesn't allow any vehicle traffic so you have to walk, but a tour guide wouldn't be useful since there are presentations in the buildings by the staff members that work there. There are several plantations in the surrounding area but you can easily drive there yourself. All the local hotels will have literature about them and that will include a map. Since the town of Williamsburg is not that big, traffic is not an issue and you can get just about anywhere there in 10 minutes or less. You will love touring the colonial village at Christmas and if you are there the first weekend, they have the "Grand Illumination" which is their big holiday kick-off and is absolutely beautiful. I was there many years ago. I still remember it. The candle shop and thwood shop were two of my favorites.

We went years ago and took the night lamp lighting tour. You followed the lamplighter around, in and out of shops and in the center of town there was a ceremony, very nice and cold. Dress warm. Williamsburg doesn't have all the Christmas lights like other towns, so be prepared and you won't be disappointed. It is very impressive like it was way back when.

My DH and I went with friends that had been there before so we were able to follow their lead.....We took as many tours as we could, both day and night. Enjoyed them immensely. The docents are really knowledgeable. We ate at different taverns, many of which are no longer there, But I remember "Christina Campbell's as a nice one. while overpriced, was part of the experience. We were there in the mid 90's. Do everything you can and you'll never regret it. We, too, are seniors and there are plenty of places to rest. The docents seemed very much aware of the people in their groups. If you need to sit, just let the docent know.....:). She or He is not a mind reader.......We loved the history. It is a marvelous place and in today's hurry, hurry world, the pace seems so unreal. We loved it!!!
