Specifically a closed base like Edwards - I just read that we will need to have our drivers licenses for id, which is no problem, but I was wondering about my 5yo - would it make life easier if he had some sort of photo id or is it really no big deal?

We are right by Fort Knox, which is now a closed base as of last year, and only the adults need an ID-kids don't need one. You also have to show your proof of insurance and sometimes they go through your car-trunk, glove compartment etc.

I am currently at Ft Dix, NJ and the children do not need an Id,

Retired military here, kids are fine, when they get old enough to go to the PX by themselves, then you will need an ID.

My SIL, daughter, and 2 grandkids are on a base and they all got a passport. Just a thought.

All bases are different.
But, to be on the safe side...

Driver's license
Proof of insurance
Car registration
ID for anyone over the age of 10

If you are arriving in a rental car, make sure you have a copy of your car insurance along with the rental agreement.

We have gone on bases where they want everyone (not to include small children) to have ID cards.
They would want proof of insurance and car registration.
And that has happened WITH us having stickers on our vehicle. But, then again, we have had them just want an ID from the driver.
Like I said, every base is different.
