Madamekelly, I will give that a try. This is my granddaughter. I have another friend whose granddaughter holds her breath. I'll tell her your suggestion too.
Pat, sorry to hear your last week of summer vacation is so hectic and stressful. Hopefully you can get a sewing day in tomorrow.

meanmom 08-22-2014 05:54 AM

My DS used to hold his breath when he was little. He would hold it until he passed out. It started happening when he fell and got hurt. He kept doing it more and more often. He was about 2 when he started it. I of course called the pediatrician and they said it was fine as long as he wasn't going in to a convulsion. Eventually he started doing it when he got yelled out. Dr said it was for attention and to ignore it. He did this for about 6 months. I was never really convinced that it was really ok until he did it in front of the Dr when he got a shot. The Dr's only comment was we have a stubborn one here.

Well, here it is. Almost the end of August and I haven't done anything to lose weight. I'm sorry I haven't been posting. Just too much going on. Finally got all our insurance money to fix damages from storm. The total damage was almost $9000.00! We now have a new roof on our house and on our shed, a new awning over our patio, money to fix our riding mower,(it was under the awning that the tree fell on), and money to fix our chain link fence and double gate. It's been a different kind of summer all right. Last week the temperature must have remembered it was August because it has gotten HOT!!! I plan on being in the September weight loss challenge and am determined to really try. Hope you've all had a great month.

Pam H - we have been on a gelato kick. It is so good and creamy - we can't stop. I now limit myself to 6 spoonfuls (small spoons) and that is it. A friend lost 60 lbs since Jan. mainly counting calories and eating off a very small plate. Only exercised on weekends. Why oh why didn't I start with her? out to lunch with the girls today - will just get a salad with dressing on the side. Only one more week to countdown and I know I did not do good. But, I will persevere.

Pam H 08-25-2014 06:58 AM

I should try gelato. There must be less fat than ice cream but how does it compare in calories?
This morning I made a big breakfast for my daughter and her French boyfriend. We had peaches, cantaloupe, French toast and sausage. I wanted his first American breakfast to be a good one. I bought a light syrup that has only half the calories of regular and it tasted fine and was plenty sweet. Tomorrow will probably be fruit and yogurt - my typical breakfast.
I have been doing great with my activity lately without even doing any exercise. I have just been doing so much picking up and cleaning that it is really adding up. I would like to go for a walk but it is already 75 and very humid. Today is our last hot day and then it should be in the 70's for a while.
This month has not been good for weight loss for me. I gained right at the beginning of the month and have yet to lose that. I'll be happy if I am the same as I started.

Silverfoxmag, the quilt is Celtic Solstice. It is a Bonnie Hunter quilt. Check out her website, www.quiltville.com and see her blog as well. She'll run another mystery quilt this year, if memory serves she starts releasing clues the day after Thanksgiving and releases a clue every week for maybe 6 weeks. She also has lots of free quilt patterns under one of the tabs on her site.

Cindy, thanks for the info, had a look and figured it was too much for me right now since I've just about gotten out of my QS, quilting slump. I've been working on a top with the flowered fabric I won in June, can't wait to post it when I finish it. Y'all will have to walk me through posting a pic at that time, I've tried in the past with no luck.

silverfoxmag 08-25-2014 07:48 AM

Pat, looks like you are a busy lady these days, slow down and take a breath, easier said than done, I know. (((((HUGS)))))

mateoh 08-25-2014 09:05 AM

Just checking in. On the way back from Dayton, OH where I left my daughter to start her second year at University if Dayton. She is living in an apartment on campus this year with three friends . I am sure there will be many cooking question phone calls this year happy week all!😊

meanmom 08-25-2014 11:15 AM

I start back to school tomorrow. The weather has turned really hot just in time for it. It is going up to 93 tomorrow with really high humidity. It is supposed to feel like 100 to 105. It will be awful in the classroom and out at recess with no air conditioning. The people in the board office tell us it isnt that bad as they sit in their AC.
I have my 2 grandsons here today. They are so cute. The younger one is 16 months and quite the character. He is eating an apple piece and has dropped it at least 10 times. He just keeps picking it back up and saying Uh Oh!. Now he has grandpas reading glasses on. He is acting weird, I guess because he can't see.

I started back today and left feeling like I'd been hit by a truck. Moving furniture, cleaning, and unpacking boxes all day. I headed straight to yoga and feel so much better. I think I can make it until bedtime before I keel over.

Purl 08-26-2014 05:41 AM

greetings from Toronto! Our Internet service has been wonky at best, but I have been thinking of you all. Lucky for me, I procrastinated about going to Tim Horton's for my one Canadian doughnut. Today Burger King bought them and took all the fun out of it. No doughnut for this girl until she reaches goal! Will post again when we get back into the States.
Purl

KalamaQuilts 08-26-2014 07:18 AM

I read that too Purl. My mind has to wonder "why"?
Our Target stores here in the US, opened 700 new stores in a move to gain Canadian dollars. 700 stores. And they are all going into the dumpster, Canadians aren't impressed.

You know what my idea of progress is? JCPenneys, an american fixture for 100 years is also clinging by a broken nail.
They will die and be gone soon, but it doesn't have to be that way. They could reopen all the empty old dumped for the malls in the 1960's stores in downtown America. Single handedly they could turn downtowns back into thriving communities that also included independents, infusing that kind of investment.

And who decided JPC was a grand name? Honestly, there should be a college for common sense.

Rob has been retired for a week now, I weighed this morning and haven't gained any weight :)
We only eat two real meals a day, always have, so as long as I watch my plate and portion size I should be ok.
It is lovely to have a meal companion. I'd guess he has been out of town at least 80+% of our 44 years.

hugs to all, Sharyn

meanmom 08-26-2014 01:05 PM

We started back to school today. It is very hot in the classroom. 92 degrees with 90% humidity. The kids and teachers were all wilting in the afternoon. No AC! I think my underwear were wet by 8:30. I drank tons of water but was still nauseous all afternoon. It is supposed to be this hot for the rest of the week.
I heard about Burger King buying Tim Hortons. Burger King will them move their headquarters to Canada for a huge corporate tax savings. Congress has been supposed to close this loophole for years.

Pam H 08-26-2014 06:30 PM

Speaking of donuts. That is the French boy's favorite breakfast. So I walked to the grocery store this morning and bought donuts. Just what I needed. I realize no one forced it into my mouth. But it was very yummy! He thought it was strange that we had sausage for breakfast yesterday. He only eats sweets for breakfast. Odd. Of course, he is only 25. Plenty of time to figure out how to be healthy.

Purl 08-27-2014 06:36 AM

We were in a Target here in Toronto day before yesterday. It was as empty as the ones back in the States. We left without a bag in hand. Sharyn - I love your idea of Penney's saving our Main Streets!!! The shop keepers here in Canada are falling into the trap. When asked if they have something they suggest we try Walmart. Oh my word. Has Rob started to rearrange your cupboards and spice rack yet? Be on guard!!! What a place - no hills and oranges from South Africa.

Jim's Gem 08-28-2014 09:11 AM

I want to join back in for September. My couple of months off have been very bad for my weight!!!

meanmom 08-28-2014 02:17 PM

School is going ok. I am having trouble with my lunch schedule. The principal has it scheduled so I go out to recess for 15 minutes. I don't care about that. She has it so I have 15 minutes with nothing to do, them 15 minutes of recess then 30 minute lunch. I don't get back to the classroom until 15 minutes after the kids do. Unfortunately this is in the middle of science class. I have 5 kids I am working with this year and they needs tons of help. We decided that at times they would forget to breathe if we didn't remind them. They are in third grade and have to be told more than once to put their name on their paper. This principal isn't as nice as the old one. The teacher is going to talk to her. The schedule is always a mess the first few weeks. I had a split lunch period today. Not something I want to continue to do. It is still really hot here. You would think I would be sweating off some pounds. It isn't working very well.
Pat

KalamaQuilts 08-28-2014 02:33 PM

Oh Pat. Our teachers have never been paid enough for what they do, and in my opinion admin have always been paid too much.

Rob's first week of retirement took a sideward lurch, he tore a retina so today he had surgery and is walking around with dark glasses.

Yesterday I had nearly 12,000 steps, today I've barely broke 3,000. The fall weather is here and the mornings are perfect for walking..

CindyA 08-29-2014 01:37 PM

I'm beat but my classroom is in really good shape and we are almost ready for open house! We go out to lunch as much as we can before students start because then we won't have the chance. Today we went to a local burger place. It was really good. Some folks ordered the burger without the bun. I should try that next time. I got the bun but nothing else (no fries or onion rings). So I don't feel too bad about that.

I went to physical therapy today and was walking better by the time I left the office. It was amazing what we accomplished in one hour. I also have new progressive lenses. They are bothering me a bit but I'm so grateful to be able to read and see across the room without switching glasses. Getting older stinks. ;)

Pat, hope you get to rest this weekend.

Kalama, hope Rob's eye is recovering quickly.

Pam, if I could walk to my donut shop I'd really be in trouble!!!

bjsmith57 08-30-2014 04:19 PM

Just checking in - still recuperating from surgery.

Teddybear Lady 08-30-2014 04:30 PM

Has the sign up for September been posted. I didn't read all through the August posts. I'm kind of behind on my reading.
I want to be in again for September. Hopefully, I'll get motivated by something soon!

meanmom 08-31-2014 05:30 AM

Woops! The end of the month creeped up on me. I will post the September thread right now. Since it is late I will leave it open a few extra days. Also don't forget to PM me you weight loss for August. Hope everyone had a good month.
Pat

meanmom 08-31-2014 05:41 AM

September Weight loss challenge is posted. The FQ theme is pink. Good luck.
Pat

Pam H 08-31-2014 06:20 PM

Where in the world did August go? I guess I ate my way through it. I gained 4 lbs. Haven't done that in a while. Time to get back on track.
BJ, I hope you are healing nicely. I can't believe how many in this group have had recent surgeries. That's one club I don't want to be a member of!

Pam H 08-31-2014 07:08 PM

These are interesting. Worth a try.

http://www.eatthis.com/sites/all/the...logo_print.png[h=1]5 WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT WHILE YOU SLEEP[/h]http://www.eatthis.com/files/Slide_I...t-settings.jpg[h=2]5. 1. Blast the AC:[/h]
A striking new study published in the journal Diabetes suggests that simply blasting the air conditioner may subtly transform a person’s stores of brown fat — “good” fat, stimulated by cold temperatures, that serves to keep us warm by burning through “bad” fat stores. Participants spent a few weeks sleeping in bedrooms with varying temperatures: a neutral 75 degrees, a cool 66 degrees, and a balmy 81 degrees. After four weeks of sleeping at 66 degrees, the men had almost doubled their volumes of brown fat. Cool!

http://www.eatthis.com/files/Slide_I...m-Wisteria.jpg[h=2]4. 2. Light a minty candle:[/h]
Certain scents can make your mouth water, and others can actually suppress your appetite. One study published in the Journal of Neurological and Orthopaedic Medicine found that people who sniffed peppermint every two hours lost an average of 5 pounds a month! Banana, green apple, and vanilla had similar effects. Consider adding a few drops of peppermint oil to your pillow or burning a minty candle to fill the room with slimming smells.
[h=3][/h][h=2][/h]

http://www.eatthis.com/files/Slide_I...s-Pictures.jpg[h=2]3. 3. Throw out the night light:[/h]
Exposure to light at night doesn’t just interrupt your chances of a great night’s sleep, it may also result in weight gain, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Study subjects who slept in the darkest rooms were 21 percent less likely to be obese than those sleeping in the lightest rooms. Not only that, the more light in the bedroom, the heavier the person who slept there. The researchers note the study could not provide evidence that light was causing the difference in obesity risk and described their results as “intriguing.”
[h=3][/h][h=2][/h]

http://www.eatthis.com/files/Slide_I...llow-green.jpg[h=2]2. 4. Avoid yellow walls:[/h]
A fresh lick of cool-hued paint could help your weight loss goals, especially if your bedroom is yellow. A spatial color experiment published in the interior design magazine Contract (not peer reviewed) presented partygoers with three identical venues painted different colors: red, yellow and blue. Though popular belief suggests red is the most appetite stimulating hue, the yellow room proved equally inviting to participants — and twice as popular as the blue room. And while people reported feeling hungriest when seeing red, they actually ate twice as much in the yellow room!
[h=3][/h][h=2][/h]

[h=2]1. 5. Hide the iPad:[/h]
Research suggests that the more electronics we bring into the bedroom, the fatter we get -- especially among children. A study in the Pediatric Obesity journal found that kids who bask in the nighttime glow of a TV or computer don't get enough rest and suffer from poor lifestyle habits. Researchers found that students with access to one electronic device were 1.47 times as likely to be overweight as kids with no devices in the bedroom. That increased to 2.57 times for kids with three devices. Leave your iPad in the living room and limit bedroom activity to sleep (and sex, if you're into that).

That's really interesting Pam, thanks for sharing. I love peppermint, I should try some peppermint oil!

meanmom 09-01-2014 05:03 AM

Interesting Pam. I should have tons of brown fat as we turn the thermostat down to 58 or 60 at night in the winter.

This is what I made with the beautiful floral fabrics I won in June weight loss challenge. Do you think I should frame it with the white or yellow like the corner stones?

Pam H 09-09-2014 11:44 AM

Oh, I really like that! Just look at all those pretty florals! I think I would frame it with yellow.

silverfoxmag 09-09-2014 02:52 PM

Thanks Pam, I was thinking the yellow as well. I really enjoyed making this top because of all the pretty, happy florals.

CindyA 09-09-2014 04:52 PM

Oh, how pretty! Another vote for yellow. That's a happy quilt.
