Wow Patti - what a drama! Glad everything worked out OK in the end and you remained your usual, sweet-smelling self!!!

sandpat 06-15-2009 05:08 AM

Oh yes K...I still smell sweet...hate that going out in the rain though, you know I could melt..hee hee!

omak...when we first got the cows, an old guy told me, there are 2 ways to deal with them...you can either chase them...OR...they can chase you...pick your way of handling them. Well, we are too lazy to run, so we teach 'em to love their feed and they come running whenever we even whisper " Suuuuueeee Boss"! And sorry to tell your Mom, she was only partially right..the black ones get out at all times of the day or night, just like the others.
We have a tiny garden now..I have to keep a lid on DH's big gardening eyes. I do like to have time to quilt you know. We just eat our corn and give it to neighbors..I only have 4 rows this year. There is a thread of my garden on here somewhere..I do need to take an updated pic. I have ears on my corn now and it is tassling out..we'll be eating it in a couple of weeks!

Marcia 06-15-2009 05:55 AM

Patti---I am so sorry about your misadventure through the storm, but it was a great story! I am glad the skunk did not get you---been there, done that with our pets--not a fun odor to get rid of.

Is your corn yellow or white? I am a sweet corn lover myself.

sandpat 06-15-2009 05:59 AM

Oh Marcia....I was introduced to the BEST sweet corn I've ever eaten...its called Ambrosia and is only available at our local co-op...but it just melts in your mouth and is very tender and sooo sweet! Its a bi-color, germinates in 5 days..matures quickly and is sooo delicious! I gave some away to some friends and her DH ate it before she could even cook it! I planted early hoping that I can make 2 crops....I did last year.

reneebobby 06-15-2009 06:06 AM

lmao what a story and it reminded me of when I took my daughter camping and we saw a skunk didn't think anything of it went to bed and then I hear her going her skunk, here skunk. OH MY GOD she was skunk hunting thank goodness she didn't find it and I told her if she got sprayed she would have been in the trunk on our way home and when the nice police officer pulled me over and came upon her he would have waved me on. (I hoped) hahaha But I just loved to scare her at that age to do the right thing and it worked.

omak 06-15-2009 07:47 AM

One of our neighbors sounds like your husband. He grows a TON of corn for people food. Then, at the end of the season, he calls me, I go clear his garden and take the stalks to feed to the cattle. They LOVE the stalks. Plus! I take the stalks and all, so I am getting some good soil to put on my pastures since the cattle won't eat the roots ... gleaning is a GOOD thing!
We know cows get out all of the time <g> Except mine ... well, mine USUALLY never get out ... LOL ... but, those black angus ... they are a different piece of work ... mine are all red, but the red semen, except for Herefords is getting harder and harder to find. Hardly any Red Angus in the books, even ... black cattle just have an attitude <g>

Aunt Doggie 06-15-2009 07:54 AM

I am sure you weren't laughing at the time, but I had to chuckle at the picture in my mind of little skunks running toward you!!!

Hope you have everything back in order and roof back on quickly!!

By the way... thank you for raising (?) the Angus!!!! Our favorite ones!!

Stay dry! :P

We always tossed our stalks, grass clippings (no chemicals used) and other "greens" over the fence to the neighbors horses...they would see us working in the garden or hear the lawn mower and come running down the hill to whinny and beg!!! The neighbor really did not have enough acerage for so many horses, so we let her finish fencing our property and let them graze there, too. They really loved us when we would glean apples...had to make sure the kids understood not to over feed them

amma 06-15-2009 05:48 PM

OH MY!!! That is A LOT of damage!!! I am soooo sorry!!!!!

sandpat 06-16-2009 04:18 AM

amma, that was nice to let your neighbors run their horses on your pasture, you must have had nice neighbors. My nosey cows usually come running when they see me weeding the flowers and garden. Funny, they do eat the corn stalks, but they don't just love them...I guess we spoil them too much and like everything else around here...they are too fat.

bluebird 06-16-2009 12:48 PM

  Sounds like ours....then someone told us that goats eat everything, ha, they get as picky as the cattle.

quiltwoman 06-16-2009 01:58 PM

So glad the skunks didn't getcha! Sounds like quite a storm. Hope you get everything back to normal soon.

What kind of corn do you plant? My dh is a corn addict and always trying new kinds.....men.......sheesh.........

quiltwoman...I told Marcia earlier in this thread..here is the info...you really should see if you can find it..you would still have time to make a crop this year with it!

Patti - you have such a GREAT attitude. I'm not sure I would be able to tell that story so people could laugh at it! I have this picture in my head of baby skunks running to you yelling "Save me! Save me!" after their mama has skipped out on them to save her own a-s-s. I was ROFLMAO.

And then I continued reading, and I came to Terri, 8 month preggers, when her cat runs into of a skunk, and manages to GET INTO THE HOUSE. Terri - NOW I was so helpless, I had to stuff my fist in my mouth so I wouldn't wake up DH - he ALWAYS goes to sleep just before I find the funniest thread.

I'm still snorting'. Good thing I didn't have a soda. I've started taking my own advice and put plastic wrap on my keyboard whenever I read one of these threads - JUST IN CASE

well, I don't do coffee, but I can drink milk...I'll be there too!
now, here's a short-short...eww, story...hubby's (*porch fartin brother),
younger brother...came to our house and they went in old pc room, to use computer...brother just HAD to expose dangerous gases to the atmosphere in there...me and SIL, were in living room.
They left quickly after, and then we went outside to say goodbye to them.
Came back in house...PEEEE-UUUU!!! WHAT IN THE WORLD????
eyes starting to burn...going towards dining room...getting stronger, can hardly breathe...coming from pc room...glanced in...paint starting to peel>>>>RICHARD!!!!
Had to go light candles and put all in pc room...opened the windows...took about 45 minutes to get that smell from the bog of eternal stench, out of our house, even used sprays, and turned on the fans!!!
His gastro system should be condemned :!:
Take some plaster and wipe it out, and seal it off permanently :!: :!: :!:
...it should be against the law to stench up somebody's house that bad :!: :!: :!:
Needless to say, I told hubby, him and brother, were forbidden to go in pc room together, again.
That was a hit and run :!:
edit: A CH-IT AND RUN :!: :!: :!:

Ninnie 06-17-2009 10:14 AM

I don't have a stinky story, but...
My first Dane, Napoleon, was huge!!! He would go out side and pick up turtles and close his mouth over them and bring them in the house and let them go. I would catch something moving out of the corner of my eye, and it would be a 6in turtle walking across the floor! We had to say through the door, Napoleon , if you have a turtle, turn it loose, then we would hear it hit the steps "Klunk, Klunk, Klunk, rolling down before we let him in. I sure do miss that dog! :D

beachlady 06-17-2009 10:23 AM

A short skunk story! Fed my two cats on the front porch in nice weather. One morning I put food out, went to get them clean water and walked back out on the front porch and there was a HUGE skunk eating their food. My 2 cats were up on the railing watching - they did not like other cats, so I thought for sure they would chase the sknuk and get sprayed - ewwwwww. Well, when I opened the door the skunk looked up at me, finished eating and turned and went down the stairs. Never sprayed - thank the Lord! It was my first day on a job here in Maine - can you imagine me calling in and saying - I can't come, becuase I just got sprayed by a skunk? Stopped feeding the cats on the front porch!!! Someone was watching over me!!!
