Baby gift---what to give
 

My neighbor is going to be a new grandpa for the first time, and for waiting forever.
should i make him a quilt or washcloths and burp rags out of minkee and terrycloth?

I do not know his daughter at all, so what do you think would be wanted more?

Any of the smaller items you listed would be fine, as would a bib or a changing pad. Personally, I've found changing pads to be quite popular with the grandparents. Just be sure to make it larger than you'd think & to pre-wash the fabric in hot water & medium-high heat. People of that generation are used to the days when heat was the only means to kill germs & get stuff "clean". I've seen those shrink by as much as 25% due to the way they're laundered.

I agree with the burp cloths, bibs and changing pads. These things can stay with Grandpa when baby comes to visit. One can never have too many.

I think an utility floor quilt for the baby to play and lay on would be great too. My grand children are always using the utility quilts no matter what age.

I like the idea of a play mat to lie on then play with as the child gets older. Not to large so that they are too big for the child to drag around.

all of these are wonderful ideas and can be a Godsend when parents forget or don't bring enough of something, or even better it's something less they have to lug around. I'm sure he'll appreciate any of those items. Burp cloths, changing pad, bibs, floor mat, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

Don't forget to give him a box of diapers for emergencies. Parents appreciate it also. My parents had a drawer in their linen closet designated for grandkids supplies.

As a grandparent, I say the floor quilt because he will really use it when the baby starts crawling around. The kids always seem to bring everything the baby will need while they are here.

When making bibs, use PUL fabric for the back. It prevents soak-throughs and remains soft even with repeated laundering. Especially great for teething bibs, too!

Burp cloths are great and quick and easy to make, however make them more to the length of a prefolded diaper . I made some from a free pattern I found on line and discovered they are a little short but the width is good. I made mine using flannel on front and back, sometimes I use scrap light batting or scrap flannel sheet in the middle. The three layers make it more absorbent.
