I learned in my early quilting days that you should place your ironing surface away from your cutting/sewing area so it makes you get up & move around.

If you have back problems, lying 'flatish' isn't a good idea. You should bend your knees or prop them up on a couple of pillows. This puts you in what is called a 'pelvic tilt.' Don't get your panties in a twist, that's not something dirty - it's to relieve pressure on your lumbar vertabrae.

i've hurt my back at least twice by leaning over too low a surface while cutting.

try explaining to your boss that you're calling in sick due to a quilting injury.

i stumbled upon a solution that works for me. i bought an extra large wooden cutting board. now, i take that board to my ironing board, place my mat on it and hack away with no problems.

I have two little dogs (one 3#, one 6#) and I have to take them out frequently. Makes me get up and move, and at my age that's very important.

I usually get up walk around a bit and maybe sit in a comfy chair a few minutes.I know where your coming from .I have arithitis, herinated discs and spurs on my low spine. epidurals help, but can't take them often.

Having Fibro and a degenerative disc in my low back, I have to get up and down constantly. If I am in to much pain, I quit. Lay down with my meds. I can not sit for hours like I used to.
