I get an email about home and garden from iVillage, and today they have a slideshow of backsplash ideas. http://www.ivillage.com/backsplashes/7-b-353525#353525 The one that looks fantastic to me is something I would never have thought of. They hung a framed piece of glass behind the stove. You could get any picture frame that fits, or maybe you already have one. I'm thinking you could put any picture you like in it, or a solid color of paper or fancy wallpaper - whatever - and you can change it easily whenever you feel like it. It's a nifty solution and would work even for people who are renting and can't make permanent changes to the wall.

Years ago women would embroider sack cloth to hang behind their stoves and when they got dirty just washed them

When I had my kitchen redone a number of years ago, I had all my backspashes covered with the same thin sheet. It has been easy to keep klean. Sorry I don't know how to add a picture. Anne

Caqn I ask why you don't llike the tile in your kitchen? We have been considering tile for our floor.

Wow...love this post it full all of wonderful ideas. I never even thought of putting a mirror as a backsplash. This seems like it would be easy - may just be my next project.

Coloured glass splashbacks are very popular here. I have tile and don't find it too much of a headache, but I can understand some people don't like it. I really like the mirror idea...would be great for increasing light.

Hi.., I just loved this post. This is full of wonderful ideas. I never thought of keeping colored splashbacks as a mirror. This is an easy project to replace the old tiles.
