a beautiful "new born" moth
 

This week I found this newly hatched cecropia moth on the post of my deck. He was pumping up and hardening his wings. Opening and closing them to test his new muscles. He stayed until dark before flying off.

It is 4 inched across. I love the delicate colors -- the pale lavendar on the wing tips and the fuzzy rust of his head and legs.

Nature can put together colors in a way that humans can not. The moth is beautiful.

Yes, they are beautiful...this year I watched at least 100 praying mantis babies hatch from an egg sac...very interesting!

Do I see a quilt in the future?

I wish I could -- I'm no good with art quilts. Traditional geometric blocks are my thing. If anyone would like more pix in order to create something, please ask. I took quite a few to make sure that I got some clear ones.

We sure do enjoy the flutterbys around here. Husband started growing milkweed and I fell in love with the smell of the flowers. Monarchs like the milkweed. Have a lot of Butterfly bushes planted. Last year there were tons of flutterbys around them. Will be planting more for them when we decide what we need. Habitat is dwindling so people want to put in Butterfly gardens, they sure do appreciate it. All of them, Moths, butterflys,creepy crawlies. Not a spider person here, but try to leave them to their job. Just don't be in my airspace. Have transport systems in the house to help us move them to the outside when we come across one. Paper plate and plastic cup.

Nice photo and it would make a great art quilt. Someone on the QB recently showed a dragonfly that they had made. Loved it!

JabezRose: I also don't kill the spiders I find in the house. I have a humane spider catcher. It's looks like a flashlight handle with a long tube on it and a cap on the end. It runs on batteries and sucks up the spider without harming it. You turn it on, suck the spider up, put the cap on the end, and then deposit the spider outside. I use it for bees and other flying things too. You need to get one of these as it is easier than the plate and cup method. lol

Me too. I spent one afternoon watching a monarch caterpillar wander from one milkweed to another -- wondering what he was looking for -- and in the end he was looking for a safe place to start his chrysalis.

I love to see the big yellow and black garden spiders in the middle of their web. As kids we used to catch bugs to toss into the web just to see the spider run and then wrap the bug with big white webbing.

My sons and I used to sprinkle crumbs to see how big a load an ant could carry . Surprising how much they can lift. Humans are wimps by comparison.
