A better mop
 

My mop broke this morning. I've gone through at least a half dozen of this kind in the last few years. It's the kind with the cotton strands the you can pull up on the handle and twist to squeeze the water out. I'm sick of them. They don't last.
My question: what kind of mop do you use? And does it last longer than 6 months? My dh wants one of those big industrial mops that needs a bucket with a ringer. I'm disabled and don't want to wrestle with all that. Suggestions please!!!

I have the same you have. I have used same type for about 5 years. I have an extra head and swap back and forth. It's hard to find a good cotton mop with a wooden handle that you can clamp on. Most have the flimsy plastic handle. DH got upset because of the price I paid for the current one but anything bigger is also hard for me to handle and not as easy to wash. I put the cotton part in an old pillow case that I also use to launder my dogs leashes. I was surprised how many people don't wash their mops after use. I throw it in with rags and dogs towels. Oh well. It's about time to get a new handle.

I usually just soak my mop head in an antibacterial cleaner and water to clean it. We have dogs in the house and live on a farm, so my mop is in almost continuous use. I did have a steam mop, but it stopped working not long after I bought it.

I use a swiffer mop but put a washable microfiber cloth on it and squirt cleaner in front of me. If the cloth gets dirty I change it out mid mop. I have had a lot of mops and floor cleaners but this is the one I like now. When we had the big dog I had one of those Hoover floor mates which squirted cleaning solution on the dirty floor and brushes scrubbed and then a different button pulled the dirty water into a different container. Worked great. Don't need it now.

Actually, the best mop made is made from linen. The strands wind together and it looks like cotton, but no lint. I can't find them now. I have 5 or 6 hanging out in the garage drying. I don't like any of them.

I use a stream mop. Just plain water needed and it dries instantly.

I buy and use the swiffer mop pads. They come in solution and it takes two to do my kitchen floor. With two small dogs I do alot of wipe ups with vinegar and water solution.

I don't mop. That and dusting. I do everything else, but hubby does those 2 chores. My mom is a clean machine and swears that the "as seen on TV Spin Mop" is the best thing since sliced bread. I'll take her word for it :-)

I also wash by floor with the Swiffer mop with a microfiber cloth. I use PineSol for the soap.

I'm thinking of trying the libman wonder mop. I read a sir e.g. that said it was very popular. I'm also going to get the reusable pads for the swifter. I already have the mop. I want to thank everyone for your help and your opinions. I found them very helpful. Gina

We bought the spin mop, and actually like it. I was using a steam mop (for years) and even though I changed the head, it was not doing a very good job, leaving streaks, etc.

Me, too! Three years with it now and wouldn't trade it for anything

The mop that spins out the water in the included bucket is my all time favorite. I like to mop and mop often my white ceramic tile floors. The mop does not leave water mark streaks like some I have used and the floor dries quickly. My daughter ordered one that the bucket cracked very soon after her purchase but after the company replaced it she has had no problems. I also wash my mop after every use.

I've used nothing but my steam mop & plain water for years. My floors, including tile grout, still look like new and I love that they dry immediately.

We were skeptical about the mop but it outperforms the steam mop we were using. Who knew?

I have one of those Hurricane Mops that spin out the water in the bucket. Loved it til I tore my rotary cuff, now can only do minimum of pushing. Purchased a cheap cotton one for a dollar @ our Dollar Tree-(super light weight) love it - and it hasn't started shedding yet and I've had it about 6 months now.

I bought a swiffer mop system but was put off by the high cost of the replacement pads. So, I bought a package of inexpensive wash cloths at target and get them wet and use spray cleaner. When I'm done, I throw them in the washer with all my other house cleaning cloths. Actually like this system as I don't feel I'm just pushing the dirt around with a traditional floor mop. They actually pick up the dirt and the floor looks and feels clean. It's whatever system you come up with that works for you. I've changed over the years but I like this best.

I love the spin mop, so far, haven't had to replace the head. Use it at both houses.
I also have a Hoover steam machine that does a pretty nice job when I do all the title floors, but it's heavy.
I use the steam pad machine in the bathroom only for quick clean up's. Not my favor machine.

I also have the mop with the wringer that you twist. So far it is fine. I use it for the first mopping then use my Swiffer mop to finish up so the pad dosnt get so dirty.

If you use cleaner on your floor and then use a steam mop, streaks will be there until every trace of the cleaner is gone. Once all the cleaner is gone then the floor will shine like new. Cleaners will leave a film, that is why there is no streaks when using them. My steam mop has a vacuum on it before the steam pad so I don't have to sweep first. Saves a lot of time. It's a Haan. Lightweight and has a big cleaning pad.

I did not like those Swiffer mops/ dusters. I have real hardwood floors and 3 dogs. I finally found a Mr Clean dust mop at Walmart-it has a 6x17 terry cloth pad. The head is a butterfly design and the pads have sleeves.I paid $8 for the entire thing and paid $2 for a second pad. I use one for dusting and the other to mop with. I have been using it every day for the past 4 yrs. This is the best mopping apparatus I've ever come across. New pads are still only $2 and I can find them in all the Dollar stores as well as K-Mart and WM and I made a pad out of that micro terry cloth car wash towel and it has made washing the roof of the car and the front and back windshields so much easier.

I have the O-Cedar spin mop now. It has a longer handle than the Hurricane Mop that I had before it broke. I will not be without a spinner mop of some kind ever again unless they quit making them. I have a dog. Nuff said.

I used to have one of those industrial mops. They work great, but are heavy and when the bucket is full of water it weighs a ton. Finally said no more--I am to old to lug that thing around. Now hubby does the mopping and bought a cheap mop. Can't say he really loves it but hasn't found anything he likes better.

Another vote for the Hoover floor mates hard floor cleaner, works great! In between, I use a swiffer, make my own cloths out of flannel.

I love my O'Cedar spin mop. I always wash the head out very well after each use and in the summer, let it dry out in the sun on a wrought iron chair. I did find a re-placement head also, but haven't had to use it yet. It does the best job on my laminate wood floors with a dash of Pine Sol in the water. Dries almost immediately too.

PS, my expensive steam cleaner is languishing in the broom closet.

I have one of those mops that spins. My daughter bought me one for Christmas a few years ago from Lowes or Menards. I absolutely love it. She has one too & loves hers

I bought the O'Cedar mop with bucket that spins out the water with a step-on lever on the bucket. It does a good job on my ceramic tile floor. Not having to get my hands wet with dirty water is a real plus. I have two dogs so it is really handy for cleaning up the kitchen floor.

I bought better steam cleaner, and I used it once and it made my floor tiles loosen. then I remembered my daughter always saying her tiles came loose in her rented houses. so it's in the closet. I use my swifffer for sweeping, and a sponge mop for mopping. they seem to be the lightest for an old lady.

Don't purchase a new mop. Use your swiffer mop. I cut a microfiber cloth in half, serge the edges and use a half like you would a swiffer pad. When dirty just use the other half. We have three big dogs and three cats in our house and I like being able to wash them out and reuse them quicker. Purchased mine at the dollar store. Save on laundry, lowers the cost of cleaning up after the animals and saves the landfill. WIN! Win!! Win!!! all around. Make my own cleaner as well using a formula I found on the internet. My husband has been able to get the lid off the bottle and we just refill it. If you can't get the lid off just put the cleaner in a spray bottle and spray in front of the mop. Works just as well as the purchased cleaner and much cheaper.
