Thanks for warning-good advice

This one is so obvious, it hardly bears posting. Yet, it does pay to remember that school is or will be out very soon and the youth of today seem to spend an inordinate amount of time posting urban legends, hoaxes, viruses, and hacks at this time of year. Suspect everything; there is NO free lunch people. Be mindful.

quiltsRfun 05-27-2016 11:18 PM

A while back out of curiosity I went through my spam folder and added up the money that was generously offered to me. I think I lost count around 200 million. LOL

DOTTYMO 05-27-2016 11:33 PM

Thanks for the warning.

ManiacQuilter2 05-28-2016 02:53 AM

I thank you too. I am fortunate keeping a low profile that I can't even remember when I got the last scam. But I have to keep remembering that they are out there!!

fmmcbride 05-28-2016 02:55 AM

When I had my resume on two job posting sites, I received tons of messages like that. Since I've retired and closed my accounts on those sites, I don't get them any more.

Occasionally SO gets one (in English and Spanish) that he needs to pay for his recent order.

sandy l 05-28-2016 03:25 AM

Last time he got this he said "wish I knew what I ordered":)

Every time you open an email from a scammer you are confirming that they have found a working email address. The best rule is to not open an email if you do not know the sender.

I am amazed at how many people are dishonest and try to scam people. We got 3 such calls just a couple of weeks ago. One was especially convincing because the caller had no accent, knew our name, knew our grandson's name, had chosen to use the name of an attorney in Reno, NV. He called to say our grandson was in jail on DUI and had been arrested after an accident in which a woman was injured and our grandson had broken nose and facial injuries from the airbag. He put someone on the phone who sounded injured and was too embarrassed to tell his father (our son). Please send $1800 by Western Union and told us how to word it to keep it off the public record. It was convincing! However, we called our son because we would never go behind the back on one of our children as they parent their children. We also noticed that the phone number we were given was from NY. Our son looked up the 'attorney'. Of course this was on Saturday. So he called our grandson's cell phone and he answered. Grandson, when asked what he was doing said he was at work. Our son went there and they called us. They long and short of it was that our grandson was pleased by all the concern-loving family. We would never bail out someone for bad behavior. But, it was convincing to start with because of all the personal knowledge. I might add that it was scary because of that very factor. Sad.

It still shocks me the people that fall for scams. I remember my great aunt telling one scammer on her phone, are you stupid or do you think I am? The scammer is betting on you being the stupid one. Keep that in mind for anyone that asks money or money for a favor.

I got the same call about my granddaughter being hurt and needing cash, etc. I listened to part of it and said my grand is sitting here in my kitchen with me (she wasn't) Are you stupid or do you think I am? The caller hung up. So many holes in that scam.

I had a cousin (70 YO)that this happened to, scared her to death, she was actually in her car, going to the bank to move money around (that she did not have) when the bank clerk asked her why she was so "rushed/upset". Thank goodness she did or my cousin would have been without money she could not afford to throw away. The bank called the police, got her calmed down, made sure her grandchild was OK and filed a report. She said the same thin, her grandchild was on the phone and hurt!! It is why I prefer dogs to people.

I often wonder just how many people still fall for these scams even after seeing the warnings? My elderly neighbor argues with them on the phone about why she doesn't have enough money to send them. I've told her over and over not to answer the phone or not to talk to them at all. Even happened with an ATT salesperson who scammed her into taking a higher priced plan that included Internet - and she doesn't have a computer. I got that straightened out for her and sent a letter to the BBB, too.

Yes, please remember, the government does not do work over the phone period!! ALL initial contacts are by mail only, ever, ever, ever!!

tessagin 05-29-2016 07:30 AM

If you need to do business with the IRS over the phone, it will be you initiating the call.

I heard someone say that when they got calls from Unknown Caller or an 800 number they answered with "Hello! You're on the air!" and the caller just hung up :D

grannie cheechee 05-29-2016 08:40 AM

If I'm in the mood to play with the scammers, it goes something like this. They tell you to get on your pc, and I say I don't know how. Just turn it on, and I'll do the rest. Where do I turn it on.? Lady, don't you know how to use the pc? What's a pc? Lady, how old are you? You really shouldn't ask a lady how old she is, but I'm 29, at least that's what I feel like. Either I go through all that or I have a whistle by the phone. They don't like that for some reason. LOL

nightquilter 05-29-2016 06:14 PM

Polly thank you. I received the IRS phone call, it seems to be the scam around here right now. The one where they call you and say you are being fined and will be jailed today if you do not pay a fine, by credit card now. So with my (as I told the man who called)slow understanding I repeated what he told me about jail time. This is how I intrepid what I heard. '' You are telling a Mother of 2 who works 2 sometimes 3 jobs till 1 and 2 o'clock in the morning, if I do pay this fine you are going to give me a paid vacation,3 meals a day, with no dirty dishes; I can take a bath with no laundry. Lay around all day, do nothing. sign me up!! I was told no, no, no. Lady, I said JAIL.I told the man on the phone, I'm sorry all I heard was VACATION.'' Let me tell you this man hung up so fast and has not called back. You can tell I do not like scams or people who tries to cheat others . I have learned sometimes on the phone if I mess with them they do not call me back. But you are right on the internet one should never even open the e-mail.

Stashelf 05-29-2016 07:17 PM

I got the call that said there was a warrant out for me for not showing up for jury duty. For $300 they would take care of it and make sure I did not get arrested. What made it funny was at the time I was actually on jury duty and I showed up every day i was suppose to. I don't answer 800 calls or out of state calls without a name in the caller id. Most of those calls end before the answering machine picks up.

swizzy 05-29-2016 07:43 PM

I may be on the 'scam suckers list' as so many calls have come from the "technical dept" regarding my computer, usually two or three days in a row. . Then the IRS calls three times in two days and as early as 6:30 AM.
A few days later Publishers Clearing house calls to tell me I have won One Million dollars. I said 'but the winners are always surprised'. 'No, we are telling you'
Then asked me to go to the bank. I said I don't drive. He asked if I had a check book.At that point I hung up.
Has anyone heard if Publishers ever calls to forewarn people of their winnings?

I just came off an airplane today. I sat next to a woman who told me her friend had paid an Uber driver $140 for a ride. He had come up to her at the airport and asked if she needed a ride.

You NEVER pay an Uber driver. The money part is paid by to the driver by the company. Tips are included in the price you pay. Your payment is to the company.
Uber drivers NEVER ask you if you need a ride. You call the company and they send a driver.
And, by the way, if you call for an Uber driver in Chicago, you'd better have your coat on. They come so fast it is unbelievable. The company contacts a driver close to you, and they are there fast.

I'm glad none of our quilters got hurt from these scammers. Your stories are priceless and entertaining.
