I received an e-mail today from 'pay pal'. It looked very official. It said that there was suspicion of someone using my account. It wanted me to use a link included in the e-mail to 'restore' my account and then make sure everything was correct (personal information wise) then it would be sent to the place that would resolve the issue. I immediately found it suspicious. I checked my paypal account by logging into paypal not the e-mail link. I then checked my bank account. Neither had any purchases listed. It was a PHISHING SCAM and I flagged as so in my e-mail.

Thanks for the warning!

klgreene 11-10-2010 05:24 PM

That happened to me a lot about 5 years ago. So I closed my account with Paypal...

Whenever you see one of those that doesn't have your name on it it's a fake.
I get them now and then but they turn up in my spam. I really like Gmail!!

trupeach1 11-10-2010 05:43 PM

I had the same thing happen yesterday. I called paypal and they had me forward it to spoof. I then had to change my password. I thought it was the real thing but it said I reported an un autorized purchase which I didn't so I knew something was up. The e-mail had the last 4 # of my master card credit card and the expiration date. They asked for the entire # to verify my account. It was a good thing I called instead of giving them the info.

Oh and it did have my first and last name.

gramqlts 11-10-2010 05:45 PM

Glad ya'll posted this. Thanks.

R U SERIOUS????
YIKES!

Magnolia - good for you for doing exactly the right thing - being cautious, going to your accounts NOT using the email but by going there using your own bookmark or typing in the web address.

These Phishes work by trying to scare you - into doing something you normally wouldn't. It's "social engineering".

Delete these emails, always access your accounts by getting there on your own (not clicking on email links). "Deals" that are too good to be true, usually are.

Keep your radar up, "let's be careful out there"!

If you ever get one of these again...don't open it...just close your emails and go straight to Paypal. If it is real, they will have an alert to you on that page. That pfishing is really bad stuff..I've had them try it a few times...

pester 11-10-2010 05:54 PM

This is why I now refuse to use paypal.

dreamer2009 11-10-2010 05:59 PM

ALWAYS...forward these to
[email protected]
if it goes to spam paypal doesn't know about it.
They need to know ...

hazeljane 11-10-2010 06:05 PM

This is not a PAYPAL problem- it's a criminal problem. Paypal NEVER sends a link in their emails- to avoid this very thing. They try to keep secure. So never click on anything in an email pretending to be Paypal.

sueisallaboutquilts 11-10-2010 06:07 PM

dreamer, you are absolutely right. I used to get them and forward to [email protected] but now my Gmail picks them up as spam. I should forward them anyway. Thanks for the reminder.

Sadiemae 11-10-2010 06:09 PM

Paypal requests that you forward them to Spoof, without opening them. That is what I do.

dreamer2009 11-10-2010 06:10 PM

Sue, with my brain injury I got taken it by one of those emails and it took forever to get paypal to get me straight again...
now I always call them when I get an email from them as I trust nothing where that is concerned. Gave them personal info and everything...scary.

ptquilts 11-10-2010 06:24 PM

I don't understand why you would quit using PP because of these emails. If you got one from your bank would you quit using banks?
They are easy to spot, just "hover" over the link they want you to click on, it will show you what website the link will take you to. If it is not where you want to go, just delete it. Or forward it.

bearisgray 11-10-2010 06:30 PM

I fell for that once, too.

Even went and got a pass word from Visa.

Fortunately, I did - eventually - that same evening - have enough sense to call PayPal. They told me to get a different credit card number and I did.

I sure felt stupid!

The only complaint I have about PayPal is that one kind has to search to find the info for what to do if one suspects fraud or phishing.

pester 11-10-2010 06:34 PM

Its not just the emails for me its the fact that actual fradulent transactions have occured thur my paypal account. I feel like I don't know enough about them to feel like my personal information is safe. JMO.

littlehud 11-10-2010 09:10 PM

Thanks for the heads up about the E mail. I use pay pal and have never had any problems.

bearisgray 11-11-2010 04:07 AM

The e-mail I got looked VERY official - even the spelling and grammar was good!

So - learn and live.

thequiltmama 11-11-2010 04:29 AM

Yep me too. One time but I learned my lesson.

Happymom6ny 11-11-2010 06:14 AM

They say to never click on anything through your email just go straight to the web site online instead. You just never know..

katier825 11-11-2010 06:16 AM

If you right click an select View Message Source, you can see the actual address it came from. I had one the other day that was from PayPall - with 2 "L's". That's how I knew it was a fake.

Anytime you get something from PayPal, eBay, a bank or credit card company, etc., you should take the time to check if is legit before you open it.

It's always best to type a website in directly, rather than click on the links in the emails. :)

nativetexan 11-11-2010 07:17 AM

me too Pester. I haven't used paypal in years due to this. still going on i see.

dreamer2009 11-11-2010 08:14 AM

another good word of advice is:
ANYTIME you are paying for anything on your computer...
OPEN A NEW WINDOW...and then close it when done.
Paypal advised me on the safety of doing this.

dgsmom 11-11-2010 08:51 AM
