i have a copy, and have made the coat, and loved it for my mom, but am a coward, has anyone else made one? i always have this fear of cutting, that i might ruin something, so often i have only half finished projects, and many of those (don't ask), the book is called beyond the bog coat by linda halpin, the original concept was for weavers, she added too, i believe what she does is beautiful, let me know

Jan,
I made a bog coat a long time ago. I had forgotten all about it till I read you post. My advice to you is jump in and go for it. My motto is "Done is better than perfect!" We are all much too critical of ourselves. Relax and enjoy the process. It really is fun!

BOG COAT??????

QuiltingKrazy 08-15-2011 05:26 AM

Please explain "bog coat"??

karon21195 08-15-2011 05:28 AM

I agree with Jan. My mother used to say "If it's worth doing it's worth doing right" I have disregarded this saying and as a result my UFO's are almost extinct - go for it!

it is an old coat, like way way back when , in virginia averys book, "wonderful wearables" she states that it is from denmark, around 1000bc, it is constructed out of one piece of fabric, (so worked for animal skins) , i really do not know how to explain it, but it is wonderful for fabrics, i have made them out of solid fabrics, but now i want to get "creative", they are cool coats, swingy and fun, almost an open palette for your imagination, i can talk, just not do, i will send you the ibn# or will try to write directions if i can, but you would have fun, it is basically a basic rectangle and it takes its shape when you cut and fold. now mind you, i have never gotten to creative with it, but i have made one out of felted wool, and it is really fun, and with felted wool, no finished edges, love that.
sorry to bother you

A Bog Coat is made from two fabrics (Quilting cottons) which make a reversible jacket. Basically you start with a large rectangle and you cut in part way from each side to form the sleeves. There are lots of ways to embellish the jacket. I Googled it and the pictures were lousy.

the book is great, i went on amazon to look for it if someone was interested, just so i could pass on the info, but could not find it, but i am not an amazon person so i might have not done it correctly, i would doubt it is out of print, it may be available on the threads website, or interweave, i do not know, my copy is from 1993, but i do have the isbn # and the publishers address in pa, if anyone wants it

I made one for my daughter several years ago out of fleece. It was far from perfect, but she wore it a lot (she was very young). I'd suggest a practice run with muslin or something inexpensive that you don't care about. I learned a lot from doing the first one but never got around to doing another...

That's really down to earth & basic.

Janallyn - if this is similar to your pattern, you could pin baste it to see if it works. If it does then sew it.

janallyn 08-15-2011 07:53 AM

arkro girl, that is more or less the way the book says it is made, the difference in the book is that the neck is square, more like a traditional japanese kimino, and then a long strip, almost like a sashing is around the neck, so the back of the neck stand up, but it is fun, now i a thinking about cutting. one thing i liked was the fact that you could applicay (gosh i cannot spell that), i have a lot of hoffman butterfly and peacock feather prints, had them for years, and that was my plan, butterfly, with the feathers behind on a solid intense colored background or black in between, anyway, did not mean to take over the post,
edited due to spelling and grammar, ha, still cannot get it right

janallyn 08-15-2011 08:10 AM

ha ha, i am on this forum and not cutting, such a chicken i am, encourage me please, cut jan cut, "it can always go into your - i will do it later boxes (not unlike the christmas skirt i started 15 years ago for my daughter, who now only paints a christmas tree on her wall, and repaints it after christmas, she may have a good point), ah the joy of youth (she is thirty, but i feel as if i should by into the company that makes kiltz)

Glassquilt 08-15-2011 11:15 AM

Cut, Jan, cut!

just tell your self that if you mess up when cutting you can always turn the fabric into material for another quilt and try again. that helps me at least to get started. also it may change the pattern a bit but i find that mostly everything is fixable. some of my mistakes have turned out to be my better work

CarrieAnne 08-16-2011 06:50 PM

Aw, you can do it!

luckylindy333 08-16-2011 06:53 PM

My take on the Bog Coat was that it has been made out of all sorts of materials for thousands of years. I made one, it was very simple, large pieces of fabric. I don't know about the Beyond the Bog Quilt...

I love it!!! Can't wait to try it. Thanks so much.

BarbaraSue 08-16-2011 09:12 PM

I made one out of prequilted fabrics. Don't do what i did. Remember to cut the yoke in front and back 2 inches longer than the depth of the sleeves to allow for movement.

jpthequilter 08-18-2011 12:21 AM

Weavers just hate to cut up their fabric, so there are all sorts of patterns that have been developed over time to make things by using rectangles. I have a lovely blouse one made of 3 rectangles that are sewn together, that is elegant !!!!

Thanks for the link. I didn't understand how it was sewn together in the first link.
An age old classic design. - I knit sweaters for my kids that looked like that.
