Binding a potholder
I'm making a square potholder with cotton on one side and a slightly heavier denim on the other. Is there a technique to make the denim continue around to the front so it makes a narrow border? (I thought I remembered seeing something about binding a quilt this way, but don't know the proper term.) How do I finish the corners?

You can bring the back to the front for a self binding finish. Since its denim, I would leave it an inch bigger all around, fold it over the front and stitch it down leaving the edge raw. I would then snip to the stitching line every half inch for a fringe raw edge. You could turn the edge under and top stitch but I don't think you will not be able to sew through all the layers especially in the corners.
If you want a clean finished edge on the self binding, it would be easier to leave the cotton side bigger and fold it over the denim. A self binding is done much like wrapping a present and you fold the corners in first. |
Using denim as binding might just be too thick. Tartan instruction are correct.

Thanks! As I mentioned in my original post, the denim is only slightly heavier than the cotton; it's not anything near jeans-weight. (Even if it were, my trusty Singer 401 would sail right through it!)
"Like wrapping a present" (which it is) I like that! |

Tartan, I'm glad you mentioned the raw-edge option. Even though I pinned it, the potholder shifted in the quilting process, so in a couple of spots there wasn't enough fabric to turn under. This is what it looks like now; I assume it will unravel in the wash?
