If you can, set up a lamp near the bird, where it can get close to it if it wants. Sick/injured birds usually love the extra heat, and it seems to help the healing process. A lamp with a regular incandescent bulb will work just fine. (I doubt the new CFL kind makes enough heat to work.) A fabric-covered heating pad turned on "low" would work too. Don't use terry cloth; the bird's claws can get tangled in the loops.

Just be sure the bird can move away from the heat if it wants, so it doesn't get too warm or dehydrated. Wouldn't hurt to provide a small bowl of water, too, and some bird seed.

At first I thought female Cardinal but after looking at the bird closer I think it was a young male. The brown/gray feathers were quite downy still and his tail and head feathers seemed brighter than the female's normally are. This morning he was gone from the window ledge but left several piles of poo behind so hopefully he stayed the night and then moved on at daylight. If he was a baby he may have just stayed out too late and got confused by the dark. My porch light was on so that may have drawn him there.

Sounds like he will be okay - I agree, from the picture he looks like a young male cardinal. Interesting, because I am way north of you and we won't see young cardinals until late spring :) They happen to be my favorite bird.

he probably would have beat himself against the cage too, doing more harm...he really is pretty

One year at Christmas time we rescued a chickadee had in in a cage and fed him seeds and berries till he was recovered and then let him go.
