Blackeyed peas and greens on New Year's Day
 

Is that a tradition with your family? Sign of good luck and money management with the new year. Is it more Southern than Northern tradition?

It has been on our New Year's table for more years than I can remember. Do you serve it also??

I believe that is a Southern tradition. I am from PA and grew up with the tradition of Sauerkraut and Pork. Never heard of Black Eyed Peas and Greens until I moved to Texas. So now I enjoy both traditions.

My family eats blackeyed peas but not the greens, which I think you mean turnip greens. Right? This tradition came from Alabama with my grandmother. I understand it to mean that if you are willing to start your new year off with a lowly meal of blackeyed peas then you will be willing to watch your spending for the whole year and as a result will be more economically blessed. It is supposed to be dried peas, not canned or frozen. It is all about being humble.

My favorite that my granny made when I was growing up - my family lived in California but Grandma was from Oklahoma - I still love to make it but doesn't taste as good as granny's did.

Both My parents were from the south(Tenn&Ark)So I had Black eye peas & Greens as a kid. Don't do it now.
But yesterday we visted our Mom at her Adult family home and the owners are Filipino. they were putting out all types of round things, apples,oranges,Cheeto puffs,candys,all in sets of 12's,and a cluster of 12 grapes on the front door All for good luck in the coming year!
They are the very best of people they took care of my Mom until her passing in 2003 and now my inlaw.

Where I grew up in NJ it was Ham and Cabbage made with the last of the ham on the bone from Christmas dinner. (that's what my momma is having today)

I don't do greens, eeeeeeeeew!

We're having home-made pizza. Not a tradition but that's what DH wants (and I'm ALWAYS up for pizza).

The only black-eyed peas I like are the band, and I think they have separated. My mother makes lentils for the reason mentioned (prosperity) and I hate those even worse than black-eyed peas.

My mom always made black-eyed peas and greens on New Years Day. My dad insisted on it. Mom was from Seattle and my dad from Arkansas. We lived in Southern California. Just for good measure, my Aunt Marion (not a blood relative but she was like my mom's sister) would visit and we would have a bite of pickled herring.

As an adult I don't cook black-eyed peas or greens. I was never fond of them as a kid. My parents have been gone now for 8 and 3 years respectively. How I would love a plate of beans and greens now.

Mom used to always have cooked cabbage on New Years Day. She said you were supposed to but didnt' say why or I don't remember why. She was from Kentucky. Relaxation is my tradition. I did make a meal today of sausage, biscuits, scrambled eggs and gravy. I told the girls to eat hardy as that was the only meal I was going to make today.
