bought my 1 st wireless device

and it has been a ruff ride.hours and hours of tech support for the tablet, and the router.Turns out my modem works for internet but not for the wireless.A new modem is on the way-but still thinking the tablet may go back.I thought it would be fun and could use it upstairs, etc. It has been hrs of headaches.Anyone has regrets on wireless devices or will it get better?

DogHouseMom 08-02-2012 03:09 PM

it will get better.

I'm an ametuer "techie" and I still had to spend an hour or so on the phone to get some of my more stubborn devices to work with the whole network - on the bright side the gentleman I spoke to was quite nice, very easy to understand, and we had a lovely conversation about traveling by train in India!!

wolph33 08-02-2012 03:13 PM

I hope so-kinda discouraging at this time.I have 14 days to get a refund-so I will give it a few days.

We have added an Ipad to our family and it is super. I am currently typing on it in my recliner in the living room. I still can't post pictures from it though because I don't have photobucket.

I have a Kindle Fire that my kids got me for Christmas. I didn't think I would use it much but I'm on it all the time. I read books, check my emails, surf the net and I have only just begun. There is so much more that I could do on it. It's confusing at first but just play around with it and it will all fall in place.

Give it a chance. You will love it and besides - you really needed an upgraded modem anyway since most stuff is going wireless.
My husband was very anti - new technology. He went out of town... While he was gone I set up a wireless network with his TV and Wii on it, the bedroom TV on it, my Blackberry Playbook and the computer on it, and signed up for 30 days of free Netflix. He loves it! It will be a year in October and we still have the Netflix. He is a B movie fan. Who knew! LoL!
I'd be more frustrated having to wait on the modem!

pamesue 08-02-2012 03:43 PM

wireless is really the best way to go....I can go online anywhere in the house with the laptop or my kindle fire...don't have to hang out in one room all the time.

wolph33 08-02-2012 03:53 PM

thanks every one-I will try some more after the new modem gets here.I was so excited on the way home-and it went down hill fast.

momto5 08-02-2012 05:05 PM

I have the Nook, the Kindle, three computers and just bought my first iPad. Will let you all know how that last one goes...I may have been just a tad too exuberant...but so far, lots of fun. I'll be able to learn more about it as soon as I can run down a ten-year old to ask some questions ...:)

Neesie 08-02-2012 05:58 PM

Just give it a chance and you'll love it! We've had wireless, for years, but then both my dh and ds are computer techies.

Rose_P 08-02-2012 06:51 PM

It seems that getting it online was an unnecessarily difficult hurdle. I hope you'll have smooth sailing now.

The family got me an I-phone for Christmas, and at first I told them I wished they hadn't because I'm usually home and my cell phone would stay in my purse elsewhere in the house while I'm on the computer, but I have to admit that when I'm out of town I love being able to look things up on the Internet, make motel reservations, etc.. Best of all is "face time" with the little grandson. That feature would be even better with the larger screen on your tablet.

I agree! When DH said he was going to do that in our house, I thought he was nuts, but turns out I love it! No pesky wire & I can go where-ever I need/want to!

It gets better. I have wifi in the house. Now our printer is hooked up this way, I have a Kindle Fire and an Ipod touch. I can listen to music anywhere, watch streamed videos in a room away from the baseball game on TV. I am a happy camper. Just stick with it and it will eventually make sense.

Rose Marie 08-03-2012 05:44 AM

I have a Kindle Fire and download free books only.
Two have not downloaded completely and find it impossible to redownload. So will not pay for books as they may not download completely.
Also hate reading a book and having it shut down because it needs recharging so often.
So I still buy good ol used books the most.
The price of downloading a newer book is equal to buying a hardback book, which I never do anyway. I read way to much to pay for hardback books. I wait for paperbacks to come out then buy them used or at discount stores.

wolph33 08-03-2012 12:51 PM

New modem arrived today-that was the problem.what should have taken 5 min took hrs of frustration and trouble shooting. Now I can really relax and try to learn.

Ccorazone 08-03-2012 03:04 PM

Wireless is the only way to go. I have the IPad, computers, printers, TV, Blueray player all wireless. Once you start using the wireless system you will wonder what you did without it.

nygal 08-03-2012 03:35 PM

I have a smart phone and a Kindle and two days ago bought the New Ipad. So far I love it. My daughter was here for the past few hours showing me things about it and I learned a lot but my brain is fried!! I love the facetime with my dear friend who lives across the country. It is so wonderful to actually SEE her!!

Crafty1 08-03-2012 04:11 PM

It was headaches just getting it set up, but now it's great! I can be anywhere in the house and outside and it works. I'm on I the iPad using the dictation, hehe so lazy to type now, and I'm having fun! Once you get everything set up, you'll get used to it and enjoy your wireless lifestyle :D

Wi-fi is the only way to go! DH has a laptop, I have a desktop, IPod Touch, Kindle Fire and an IPad. Our printer is WiFi too. I wasn't as happy with my Fire as I thought I'd be so when I had the money I bought an IPad (just a couple weeks ago) and absolutely love it! I can sit outside with it while watching the grandchildren play. I read the Quilt Board on here everyday! Watch quilting videos, etc. FaceTime with my best friend is neat! Just thinking about finding out what other friends have IPads I could FT with!
Get yourself together with your wi-fi and you'll be so glad you did!

Grandma Mary 08-04-2012 07:13 AM

Stick with it if possible at least until you get your wi-fi up and running. I think you'll change your mind once you see how much freedom you'll have from being tied down in one place in front of a monitor. In the last six months I have acquired a Kindle Fire and the newest iPad and I LOVE them both!

BellaBoo 08-04-2012 10:41 AM

We have wi fi all over the house. When you get a new router get a router extension. It plugs in an outlet and makes the signal strong in the part of the house the router is not close to. Most of our toys are wirless. TV, laptops, phones, Kindles, Itouch, Roku. All of our wireless items connect automatically to the network. Older electronics may need technical support to get connected. Our wireless is not necessary, just a convenience, and fun so it if there is a major black out we won't suffer other then boredom. LOL

dingle525 08-04-2012 10:55 AM

Hang in there - you'll get it. After working on a pc for many years, I swore I would never have one in my house. Well the gchildren got one and in order to play games and talk to gma I had to get one too. A desktop (lol). When I retired they asked what I would like for my retirement gift. I requested one of their used laptops. I now have 3 laptops (4 if you count the one I increased the RAM on and burnt out the motherboard). All are on wireless and used for different purposes.

Find yourself a teenager...they can help you. My nephews update things and show me secret tricks every time I see them!

molsonbindie 08-04-2012 02:56 PM

Please stick with it....it will change your life. It sounds extreme, but once you use it, you keep thinking of other ways to use it. I got one for Christmas and boy oh boy am I hooked. I don't use it for social networking - not into twitter or facebook but the ability to go on line anywhere in the house for infos and demos is priceless......I use is for ereading, quilting mags, books, utube video how tos....everything.....give it a try, you will not be sorry.....

Pollytink 08-04-2012 04:06 PM

My son set up wireless for me so I could use the laptop he loaned me in the living room, to watch Netflix, etc. Then I bought a Roku for Netflix. I started wanting a Nook Color so I could get books from the library and discovered online that there's a special card, an N2A, you can get for it that turns it into an android tablet.....and can get Kindle books on it too then. I thought I'd download the Nook for PC first and test the library book thing but haven't done it yet. From the reviews I read, the Nook seemed better for reading books on, but if I do the card thing, I'll use it for more than that. I've been holding back doing it but you all sound encouraging!

Normally wireless is great. I have my laptops, my cell phone and my Nook color all are wireless. This being said one complaint I hear all the time is that with iPads, Nooks and Kindles, etc if you are accessing some wireless places like here at the hospital where i work; you can see the wireless network but not connect to the internet. That's because like here our proxy settings are on the side of the firewall that these devices can't access because these devices won't allow you to adjust your settings like a laptop can. I would still not quit using a wireless because for the most part and most of the times you can use the wireless. My son will go to McDonalds' etc where they have free wireless and it works great. You just got a bad device

wolph33 11-14-2012 04:34 PM

I have returned the 1st device and later got a 5 inch Samsung player.I am loving it now.after the new year I may get a 10 inch tablet.

I have wireless too - last weekend our router went belly up - my husband and I felt like two toddlers left alone in the house for the weekend - but we did it - we figured out how to get the new router up and running and things are working great - I can use my laptop and my nook anywhere in the house and I got my printer hooked up wireless - so we are very happy with our wireless router - good luck.
