Welcome from Texas. I used to watch my DMIL do those. All I remember is her having a long rope of braided fabric's that she would wind together and and stitch together as she wrapped it. She used a heavy thread that was stronger than we use for sewing. She would start shaping from the center round , oval or which shape she wanted and worked from there. It looked very simple to do. Good luck with it.

Welcome from Ft. Myers, FL. I have a braided rug "kit". It has a metal type tool and I have rolls of 2" wide wool fabric (I think). I will check it out tomorrow and see if it has instructions (I think it does). I never used it, got it a ayard sale many years ago Way up in closet. I will PM you and let you know. June

I made braided throw rugs for my kitchen and bathroom once when we had a power outage for a week. I cut strips out of old T-shirts, braided them and sewed them into coils by hand with dental floss. I don't know if I did it right but they lasted for years. It's amazing what we can do when we are bored and can't use our sewing machines.

I remember watching my great-grandmother make braided rugs when I was a kid. She used any heavy fabric but her 'best' rugs were made with wool. She'd sit at her sewing machine and sew the strips together. After she got a braid started, she'd put the end over the thread spindle on the sewing machine - braid some more, than adjust to braid again. If she needed to add fabric to her strips, she was right there at her machine. She used carpet thread to sew the braids together for a rug. When polyester fabric became popular, she used that. Those never wore out. I still have some around, and she passed away over 25 years ago.
