braided rugs

does anyone know how to make those scatter rugs using 2.5 strips of fabric? I think it would be great to use up some fabric. thanks

My quilting teacher just finished one and threatened me with making one; looking forward to it. Will try to share pattern with you when I can.

There was a thread on here a couple of months back about using shaved toothbrush to sew/crochet them. You can also use a super large crochet hook to crochet one. I've made a circular one this way. Maybe someone knows where the thread is.

i have a pattern got it at my LQS i think its from grisely gulch patterns.

HummerGardenCrafts 05-18-2012 04:28 PM

I crochet these rugs, round or oval. But I just do the pattern as I go. None are ever alike.

I bought a loom from Country Threads with instruction and a video several years ago but have not made a rug yet. You work with 2 strips going over and under with each strip. I bought it to use up my stash. Ha!

How do you treat the raw edges?

Blue Bell 05-18-2012 05:13 PM

Cut the strips with a "pinking shear" rotary cutting blade.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I did not know it was crochet! that won't be a problem, just thought it was braided somehow.

erstan947 05-19-2012 04:53 AM

Donna, you can also braid them Years ago......like 40 years....I braided room size rugs from wool. I got wool clothing at the thrift store. I folded the raw edges in as I braided. I hand sewed the braid using carpet thread. Try different ways and see which method you like best.

My grandmother taught me to crochet these and she just used cut or ripped fabric with no special edge treatment. Some of the fabric was recycled from work clothes or whatever was in the "rag bag." We are still using some of these rugs 50 years later! From what I've seen, if you braid them, then you have to sew the braiding to make the rug. with crochet, when you're done, you're done! Good luck with your endeavor.

I have braided a rug and I like the toothbrush rug better, I think is quicker. With the braided rug, you have to have 3 strips of fabric and you braid it, then you make it in the shape that you want. With the toothbrush rug, all you are doing is tying knots and working in the shape you want practically right away.

I also bought their loom and booklet...not the video and some day will get around to using it....but it has been quite a few years!
I have crocheted a couple rugs with a size q hook...and am also braiding a rug with the traditional wool fabric...but I think cottons would also work well.

I hated the toothbrush method. I managed to make a small mat.

My mother did it this way and I still have a room size and a couple of small area ones. She used tips that looked like the ones we now see to make binding (the strip feeds in one end and folds in both sides to the middle). Mine are wool and are probably about 50 yrs old. I need to repair a couple of areas (sew the braids back together) but they wear like iron and make great area rugs. She also crocheted rugs and one time cut up old panties and slips to make soft ones for bathroom. With wear and washing these got really stretchy and out of shape.

These would be fun to make!

raedar63 05-20-2012 01:19 PM

I make rugs and there are lots of ways to do them . If you can crochet I think that is the easist way . I like the toothbrush ones too and lastly the braded ones. I dont like sewing the braids together but that is just me :)
There are several tutorials and vidieos online

Toothbrush method? explain!

I used to have a braiding kit - the braider (doo hickey) looked alot like a bias tape maker - you run the fabric through the doo hickey and it would fold the edges of the fabric in so that you would get less of the raw edges then you just braided them and whipstitch the braids into rugs. I know that wasn't a good explanation but I am sure you could look it up on google.

there was a thread a few months back about toothbrush rugs and when I asked I was sent this link to them, I hope this helps

these are fun to do with old bed sheets. I just cut strips, and crochet. I have several. The dog likes the one I made from a flannel sheet set. they was nice in washer.

Is your loom like this? I had my DH make a loom for me, I had so much fun making this rug and used up a lot of old sheets, clothes and random fabric. I finished this one over the weekend and started another last night. I will try to remember to take a photo of the finished product and post it soon.

You can also use the strips on a latch hook backing (like big needlepoint canvas) and just do loops instead of the cut pieces. Don't remember exactly how I did it, as that was quite a few years and many projects ago. I don't think I cut the strips into little pieces, but I know you can do it that way. You end up with a very soft fluffy rug that will fray with washing like the denim and flannel rag quilts.

Still have not made one of these, been busy and out of town and to dr; as soon as I get to it I will try to share it.
