Brother ScanNCut vs. Silhouette Cameo
 

I have been looking at both of these cutters. I would mostly use it for cutting fabric (applique). Has anyone use either or both of these cutters and what is your impression.

I have only seen a demo on the Brother Scan & Cut. I don't do that much applique and getting thru all the menus was totally confusing, at least for me.

I considered both machines. I chose the silhouette cameo because the software can be updated. I have successfully cut fabric appliques with it. The customer service is good too.

I love my cut and scan, rather for crafting or cutting fabric. Yes, it only cuts one layer at a time but its so fast that makes up for the number of layers. There is a new software coming out any day now, that will be able to be used with all cutting machines. It's call cut n craft. It'll come with designs, lots of tutorials, etc. it'll save to multiple formats. I've already ordered mine, just waiting for it to come in. the other nice thing about the Brother cut n scan, it has free updates. They already updated my older one so that it now scans in color, etc. The only thing the newer one does is connect to wifi, I never saw a need for that and the longest scanning mat you can't cut from. Not a big deal to me. The free updates are invaluable as far as I'm concerned.

Weighing late, but I have the silhouette cameo. It cuts fabric great, but I find you really need to stiffen the fabric with spray starch or terial magic to get consistently good cuts. I really like the large cutting mat but was a little bummed that the designer software was extra. The main selling point for me is importing SVG files into their software. I design in Illustrator and can export right to SVG. I believe the brother machine is possible, but it's a bit of a work around (there's a tutorial here for using SVG on brother's machine: http://www.chatterboxquilts.com/blog...her-scan-n-cut).

Neither one is what I would call "user friendly" but if you are familiar with using an embroidery machine & software, cutting machines are similar.

So... what'd did you get?

Went to chatterbox website....this is way too techie for me.......then went to gravy mans site. Quilt fusion.....? I guess this is more for those into "art quilts"? Not in my realm of quilting.

I looked at both and got the Cameo for several reasons--I wanted to use the screen on my laptop to design, I wanted to be able to scan in photos easily, wanted to use with fabric, vinyl, cardstock, etc. I like that I can either design my own cuts or can download (most are $1 each so I often wait for the 50cent sale) designs (and there are a ton). That being said, it's important to use either a fusible or heavy starch so plan on doing mostly raw edge applique, guess you could do a needle turn with a very lightweight fusible on back but cutting a complex design is harder then. Updates are free. While I've enjoyed it and used for fabric and other medium, I just got an Accuquilt Go BIG that I'm loving--cuts tons of fabric and depending on the dies bought (down side is they are pricey) you can do applique, too.
