California Heatwave, Flex Alert today.....
I live in Southern California, it was 107 in my backyard yesterday, today they are predicting hotter..... I slept last night with the AC running all night and I did nothing but toss and turn all night...
A Flex Alert has been called, asking us all to reduce our electricity useage....and I am more than willing to do my part.....So I will make the sacrifice and not run the vacuum cleaner, I will not do any laundry, I will not run the dishwasher (just let them stack up or switch to paper plates)...instead of opening my refrigerator I will get all my ice from the door dispenser.......I will even go so far as not to cook and heat up the kitchen (pizza delivery tonight)....but I kinda will draw the line at that I will not un-plug my computer, I will not un-plug my sewing machine, I may give my iron a break, but I will not turn my thermostat up to 78....all else fails, I will go shopping at my local quilt store for the afternoon...... And that is my story and I am sticking to it..... It really is too hot to sew, quilt or even think....lots of TV today and every quilting program on my DVR will be reviewed again..... |
What a good citizen you are... no wasting electricity with crazy things like the sweeper... LOL! I love it! I guess we sent you our heat because yesterday it was 70 something here! I slept with the windows open for the first time in forever! It was sheer bliss! Hey, haven't you guys had a series of small quakes, too? What's up with that? That's yet another reason not to clean... moving stuff around in your house might make the plates under the earth shift & cause real problems... LOL!

Where I lived in California they did roving power blackouts. The power was automatically cut off for a certain period of time whether you wanted it or not==except if you were in the zone with a big hospital.

[QUOTE=Deborahlees;5431266]....I have a devise on my air conditioning unit that the Edison company can turn off just my air during a 'crisis'....In the 10 years I have lived here it has never come to that but....you never know,
I've had the same device here in IL for the past 10 or so years; it saves me $10/mo. on my bill during June, July, Aug. It's never been cut off. Last mo. I received an automated call from ComEd telling me a/c would be shut off for 3-4 hrs. It never happened. |
I really like your "good citizen approach"! And I agree... it's too hot here in MS to do anything but stay in AC, sit and play on computer and drink lots of Diet Coke!!
|
I think it's admirable of you to soldier through it just like you're doing! At least your sense of humor hasn't been fried. May I suggest frozen umbrella drinks too with a little rum just for medicinal purposes? The northeast has been dealing with humid, awful weather too, in the 90's. Can't imagine what you are experiencing. I'm so looking forward to a crisp fall day and candy corn!
|
Here the heat isn't horrible today, but I'm watching the news/weather where the screen is covered with red and orange blotches an area just 30 minutes north of us, and 60 70 MPH wind gusts....oops there goes the satellite...
Oh, good back again!...... for now. Jan in VA |
I remember one Christmas day in Miami when it was unusually cold and Florida Power did a rolling three hour power cut without telling anyone. Many people had Christmas dinner in the oven and no warning of what was going on. Opposite weather conditions, but can you imagine having your dinner ruined and no idea if and when power would come back on?

You are such a good citizen to make those sacrifices to conserve energy. I agree that I would not turn the AC temp up to 78. If I did that, I'd be a big ole puddle!

Well, hmm, we do keep our A/C at 78, but if we kept it much lower the cost of the electric would kill me more than the heat would. The last week here its been around 115, and while I realize we are in the desert, this is still even hot for us. So if you compare 78 to 115 its definately cooler inside than out :o
|
I keep my AC up around 76-77 during the summer. I don't want such a big shock when I come inside from the 90 degree plus temps and high humidity.

Well I survived yesterday...did not loose any power....when I went to bed last night at 9pm it was 85 and humid outside, so left AC on all night. I have ceiling fans in every room of my house along with a whole house fan in the upstairs hallway..... When I got up this morning at 6 am it was 72 but lots of high clouds and you could feel the humidity in the air.....it is supposed to only be 97 today as compared to the 107 of yesterday, will believe that at the end of the day. Ran two loads of laundry at 6:30 am, it is only 8:30 and pushing 85 degrees outside, the AC just kicked on, getting ready to sit down again for another long day in front of the TV, with a cold drink in my hand for sure.
|
I also live in Ca and it was 111 in Lake Elsinore yesterday. I'm with you. No chores today, just the TV (must watch the Olympics) and the air conditioner and of course my sewing machine
|
I live in La Quinta, the low desert, near Indio, CA. The last 3 days were 117 they said on the news. My covered patio thermometer said 120. I keep the AC set to 78 during the day and 81 at night, running ceiling fans. My house is well insulated. This seems comfortable to me but my 3 chihuahuas all want to be covered up with quilts. I do love the weather here in the fall, winter and spring but the summers seem to get harder as I get older. Perfect weather is coming!
|
I've seen those decorators pull the ceiling fans out. They wouldn't pull mine. They really do save on the 220 AC. I run my fans all night and love it. It's 107 and 8 here for a month or so. I'll be glad to see cold weather. In Texas

I'm in N. Calif. and its been 102 here and will be again today, thats hot for us, however it does cool
down at night, so about 50 in am...we keep our air at 72, our house isn't all insulated just the attic so it keeps us cool.... |
here in kansas we are having 102- 104 with a lot days of 106 thrown in since mid june. the couple of days it was 94-98 was great to get out in. it's already been a long summer. i do what i can by putting the a/c on 76-78 during the day but since not much is on tv that isn't on, just the puter and sewing machine and 1 lamp.DH has started back to work so now it will be running less things.

Oh, dear, I would freeze at your homes!!! Last summer when I was house/pet sitting for my daughter in Tampa, Florida, I'd turn on the AC when the temp in her apartment high 85, but by the time the temp got to 80-81, my feet were getting cold, so off the AC would go. There were ceiling fans in my bedroom and the living room and they were on all the time. Here in eastern Washington, it has been between 95-100 for weeks and our window AC in the kitchen is set at 74 to cool the rest of the house. I hate going into the kitchen because I freeze - good excuse to not cook!!! In the evening my DH sits in his chair with just shorts on...I'm wearing sweats and still cold! I find myself going outside just to warm up a bit!!! Of course, I freeze all winter here too!!!

I keep my AC on 78 but ceiling fans save the day. Every time I see one of those decorator shows where they immediately rip out the ceiling fans b/c they are "eyesores" I laugh - no way I would part with my ceiling fans.

We had some crazy high days here in VA Beach too. I can't breathe when it gets that hot with the humidity. Its a chore just to let the dog out. While the news said it was 97 etc. Our thermometers on the covered deck said 105 + some days.
All I can say is I am very grateful we have airconditioning and I wonder how the women way back with their corsets and high necked long sleeved dresses every survived. |
I live in the Sacramento, CA area, it's hot and humid already. I saw on the internet it is supposed to be even hotter tomorrow. We have ceiling fans in every room, we keep our A/C set on 81. We have a window air conditioner in the master bedroom and we keep it on at night so we can get a good nights sleep, we turn the house A/C to 85 then. I hope we get some relief, it's been this way for several days.
|
My brother lives in your area and said it was 112 the other day. I just got back from O.C and blazing hot there and coming thru Riverside and San Berdoo, it is about 85 on the mountain but to us that is still too hot, we are not flexin up here lol, turned on the air and calling it a day :).

You are so right Nanamoms Oxford MS is hot and humid most of the time, except for the last 2 days [it has been cooler]. Can't live here without AC. What part of MS are you from?
I would like to meet some quilters from here. |
Well it is Monday....I made it thru the weekend, had no outages, but my poor little AC unit has been running 24/7.
Had a summer rain storm on Saturday with thunder, lightening and rain drops the size of silver dollars....The on Sunday storm clouds and touch down of not one but two tornados just north of me.....What crazy summer weather....was only 99 yesterday but I think its going to be hotter today. My poor vegetable garden is not doing well, some of my bell peppers are sunburned and my big beefsteak tomato plant is all but gone...however my onions are going very well, I guess it helps to have your head buried in the dirt !!!! Started a new cross stitch pattern yesterday to keep my hands busy. Have not been to the market in a week, need to go today as I am out of dogfood and wine !!! |
